Just had to share this one.

We had already done two dives on the north shore of Kauai yesterday, and were just snorkeling around when this little guy cruised on up. We've seen plenty of them, but this one was HUGE. Just to give you some kind of scale, its head was easily the size of the big end of a baseball bat, and the shell was a good 3+ feet in length. Just stayed motionless (can't chase or interfere with them, period.) It swam right up, and dove within a few feet of the camera. I'll have to post up the video when I get home.

These were just screen grabs from HD video I shot. I wish the underwater housing was rated for more than just snorkeling depths, since my older boy and I found a 3-1/2' white tipped reef shark that let us pet it before slowly moving off on our second dive.

Did you try to pet it?

That's a negative. There are hefty fines for interfering with them. Besides, with a beak that size, this animal could probably remove a finger quite easily.

Aside from the vestigial tail similarity, I think the turtle has a little more neck than Mikey.:D

BTW, the tail on this turtle was the size of a small traffic cone!

Great shots and WOW what a treat to have Sea Turtle that big come that close.

Nothing better than Snorkeling or Scuba Diving in the Tropics.

I hear Hammerheads will let you snuggle:D

My girlfriend went to Costa Rica for a few weeks and worked at animal reserve where the sea turltes laid their eggs. Been a big Sea Turtlle fan since.

Looking at them is free. Cuddling would cost an arm and a leg. ...and the other arm, and probably the other leg, and whatever else was attached.:D

Awesome pics!!!! Can't wait for the video!!

I really miss diving Oahu! Gotta be careful of the turtles, they will actually tackle you with their shoulders and force you into the reef! They seem very docile, and usually are, but if you corner one, WATCH OUT!! They can actually swim quite fast when they need to!

And some of the best hammerhead activity can be seen just inside the mouth of Pearl Harbor on Oahu!! You can lay in the channel and watch a school of 200-300 swim out every morning, and back in in the evening!! Absolutely amazing sight!!!

Have fun and stay safe!!!!
