I always use them when I can. It's like talking in person, you don't stand there with a straight face talking with a mono-tone (unless you're Steven Hawking). I use them to get my tone across, nothing more, nothing less. IMO everyone should use them, the www would be a better place for it. So many bitch fights could be avoided as people take things the wrong way and in fairness it's hard with smiles, let alone without them to gather ones tone. Sometimes it's justifiable when people get ape-shit at a comment, how are they to know you're sitting there laughing?? Oh, I know! Smiles.
