speeding on the streets

What's really bad about that is the one or two of the vans with kids floating around inside, not in a car seat, or even buckled in!!

I know when I was a kid no one used car seats, I think some of the car seats were more dangerous than being thrown around in an accident. But, this is not the case anymore! I have three beautiful kids, and I love them too much to let them get in the car without being restrained properly. Do these parents not love their kids!? THAT MAKES ME ANGRY!! And I will often let the parents know if I can get their attention. Sometimes when I can't get their attention, I get the cops attention!

Well, we just returned from San Diego, most of the drive was posted 8, it was then raised to 10 and then 17. I'll be honest, I made it in 4.5 hours. I may have exceeded the posted limit from time to time. I'm not proud of it, but I'm honest.

Well due to my love of arguments;) lets jsut look at this subject for a moment shall we.

Racing on the street good? bad?

Driving at high speeds good? bad?

Driving recklessly good? Bad?

I have noticed alot of people saying speeding on the highway is a terrible thing, or that bumping off with another vehicle and running up to 100mph or so is dangerous.

Well it may be BUT

I also know of alot of members on here that have done that very thing,, and then turn around and say its bad. hhhhhmmmmm
Lets do say that speeding on a public highway should be done in the right place and time.
but tell the truth....

how many have done the "lets see what she'll do" thing?

how many have jumped on another truck or car "jsut for fun"?

how many actually drive the speed limit in a 35zone or a 70 zone?

Please dont say you dont speed. 98% of the country speeds , I see it every day! The average used to be 5mph over, now its around 12mph over on the east side. Very very very few can say they actually drive legal, and I applaud those that do.
but how bad would it hurt at 80mph compared to 150mph?
bout the same I figure.

Now racing on the street, thats a good one.
If you know where you are at , and the area, should you do it?
Weeellllll how many actually have? answer ....most of us! Even if its a minivan, it jsut dont matter, we need to show our power. I know I do.

driving recklessly? Burnouts? chirping tires? fast thru a curve?
We all do this , common now! thats why we bought the trucks!
I know of some personally that have driven dangerously and still speak out about other people being dangerous, hhhhmmmm

And have ya done it with a passenger? Of course! Who else we gonna show off too? Kids is a different subject though, we try to be more mature right?
WRONG! How many times has son said "kick it daddy!" or " do a burnout"?
If people were honest , i would say quit often.

Guys lets not kill someones post just because they went fast, or outrun a ford focus on the highway, most of you do the same thing, I know I do, I know its dangerous, I would never want to hurt another human being and try to use good common sense and judgment, but it happens.

And truth be know, if you are reading this, you have done at least one ofthe above, so next time before you step on someones good time, think about what you do yourself before you post, I know i will.

let the fights begin, oh and as soon as it gets out of hand move this thread to offensive.

way to say it dawg, way to go :congrats:

Actually speed does not kill. It's the people that are not paying attention to what they are doing that causes accidents.

That goes for both sides though - not only the speeder, which is flying through traffic, passing on the blind side, tailgating, and cutting others off but ,,,,

the clown who is doing the speed limit (or at least closer to it) that's NOT paying attention, NOT looking before he changes lanes, NOT passing in the passing lane, NOT using his turn signals, on the F'n cellphone, and basically NOT showing any common courtesy for others on the road.

Ya ever take notice to how people change lanes on a highway? The signal comes on (IF they even bother to use them) the instant they start to move over, , , Then they check their mirrors.:banghead:

Well, I certainly can’t say I never speed. I’ve always been the kind to blast the speed limit (plus I’m an ex-cop, so go figure). My first car was an ’86 IROC-Z. So my need for speed has always been in me way before the SRT bug injected its venom in me. But really there is a time and place for everything. I maintain my cool when the child is in the truck. I am guilty of keeping not so cool when tempted AND alone; at least if I feel it’s safe to do so. But that in no way means my judgment is greater than anyone else’s. It’s all about knowing your abilities and praying that you make the right decisions (in the middle of making a poor one of course). Gas prices being as high as before slowed me down quite a but too. But now that prices are dropping I’m sure more petals are meeting the metals around here. You are all adults and no one here is stupid. I am sure you are all very aware of the consequences in busting the speed limit. Just keep it as safe as you feel you can and keep them smokies off your tailgates.

LOLOLOOOLL Yeah I know everyonw is quick to jump on someone about the issue , but where are they now?:dontknow:

common guys ! lets here both sides!

I like huggs!;) :D

in ft lauderdale on the streets i can roll 55 in a 35 and not have any troubles. there are only a few locations around town where cops will sit and shoot radar which is very rarely! The free way is crazy...not too bad of traffic like Cali or Seattle....but we have 6 lane wide one way and the fast lane is always movin at 80+ in a 65 zone. you get the occasional guy who sits in the left lane going the speed limit and a train starts coming up behind him and before he knows what has happened he gets his doors blown off by 10 cars in a row dipping in to the right of him and back around. Street races are common as there are a lot of sports cars down here and show offs! The most crazy are the bikes! lots of street bikes racing all over and lots of stunt guys pulling crazy ass shit at 90+ on the free ways!!!!! I only turn on the radar on the freeway and again there are very few speed traps on I-95. Oh and buring out and cornering fast yeah I'm guilty of that too! I am respectful and careful.....no accidents to date and i'm 27....knock on wood!!!! But i know my limits and how i can drive....i try to save most of it for the track but i let it rip on the streets at least twice a day! how can you not w/ a viper engine hooked to a manual 6 speed!!!??

Stinker, I can't argue with you either. I was considering starting a thread much like this. Glad you did all the work!:D

When the righteous few rear their ugly asses about someone posting about getting a lead foot, it is automatic for them to think that these people have done so without considering their surroundings or the consequences. And as such, these muthertruckers are some of the most hypocritical ass pipes on the forum, perhaps the planet. Sure, it's always better to be safe. But don't lean on that mantra like you're something special.

It is my sincere hope that the majority of us are using some common sense when we decide where and when to goof off. The thought of a kid running out onto the street, or someone changing lanes without looking is usually enough to keep me in line. Yeah, it's kind of an oxymoron, but I'd like to think that I'm being careful about doing something dangerous. But I'd rather be an oxymoron than just a plain moron.:eviltongue:

Ok....so I thought about this before I jumped on the keyboard....

2 very seperate issues here....

First issue is speed....Speed in and of itself is not dangerous if controlled. 100mph in a Z06 is different than 100mph in a Camry. Given good visablity, open road and a performance based vehicle speed is a relative term. I feel better at 90 in my car than I do a 60 in a 4X4.

Having said that. There is a threshold for these trucks. I think Dodge did a fair job with the SRT, but in the end they are a 2 1/2 ton poorly balanced brick with primative suspension and a high center of gravity. These trucks are not safe weaving in and out of traffic at 100+mph...They are trucks. Hell the lack of ISR alone makes these things a danger...

Second issue is street racing. Different animal...there is a reason why a speeding ticket is a simple fine and street racing is a serious crime with significant penalties..Now for the sake of arguement let's say you are a Mario Andretti, super driver with cat like reflexes, ex military, ex cop, ex stunt driver etc..great....what about the other idiot you just encouraged to tear ass down a public street....what are his skills or better yet judgement...In my opinion if you street race and during the race you back off but the guy you are racing keeps going and then kills someone....you are as responsible as he is....How do you sleep with that...so you trust yourself....fine but are you going to truct this perfect stranger....?

As far as the "reckless stuff"....burn outs etc...that is a relatively small deal...these trucks are a blast to launch tires on fire, loud and in your face...most of us get out of the throttle in a few seconds before the ting is even going 30mph....

Ok Stink....there you go....:D

well, i gotta say -- as you get older you tend to drive slower.... i know at 43, i find my self driving more around the speed limit than in my youth...... i'm amazed when i think of the bad choices i made in my 20's, things i'd definitely not try now.....
i know that now that i have kids, especially teenagers, i don't want them to drive like i did when i was their age.... remember driving the family car -- i wrecked 2 of them...... as a parent, you naturally want to play down speeding & racing because youth feel invincable but have no skills as of yet..... i refer to teenage boys as "young, dumb & full of cum"........
now that's not to say that i don't take the opportunity to pound on a lightning when i get a chance..... but youth & driving is a dicey thing at best.... there are stories in the portland area of street racing youths dieing every few weeks....... someones kid ain't comin' home...... that's my fear for my kids...

just be safe....... know that there are consequences & cops take a dim view on all of it...... i know none of us want to be responcible, either directly or indirectly, for someone's death.......

now with all that said, go spank some furds........

awesome response Nowwhat but you didnt leave room for me to argue withyou!LOLOLOL

I think we all know what we bought these trucks for, and most of us are of age to know when and not to, but there are exceptions. hopefully we all make the right decisions:D wanna race?:p

Great response Nowwhat. Moparracing, I am with you....@42 I drive way more conservativly than 20 years ago. Its a good thing I did not have this truck back then!!!

I have blasted to third gear from a stoplight in a so called street race but thats it. I shut her down at 60. Probably shouldnt have even done that.....but what I see sometimes with cars going over 100 with traffic.....thats just really wrong.

Almost without exception, I almost ALWAYS speed. However, I never race and (based on my understanding of the word, I almost never drive "recklessly"). Racing and recklessness are BAD. Speed is not inherently bad. However, inattentiveness and lack of sufficient ability to handle the speed driven is BAD.

I have taken several motorcycle and auto driving courses. In the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) advanced rider course, they use to emphasize the riding technique known by the mnemonic "sipde" - Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide and Execute. Which means, scan the road away (as far as you can see), identify any problems that you see, predict what's likely to happen based on what you see, decide how to avoid any problems identified, and then execute the plan. MSF now uses a SEE approach: search, evaluate and execute. It's simpler to remember, but amounts to the same thing.

As while riding, my attention in NEVER diverted from the road at any speed, but is particularly acute when driving FAST -- 80-100+ mph -- which I do with regularity. However, I don't fight the flow of traffic and notch it down to the flow of traffic whenever it's not possible to drive faster, which means I don't cut in and out of traffic, I don't tailgate and I don't go ballistic if some idiot cuts me off or does something stupid in traffic (which happens with great regularity).

The problem w/most drivers today is that they fail to pay attention to what they and others are doing on the road. People figet w/the radio and a/c, turn their heads to talk to passengers and/or kids in the car, and (worst of all) talk on the phone while driving with only one hand. A recent report of a study apparently proved the driving and talking with a cell phone in hand is WORSE than driving drunk. Think about that when you see someone doing that and give them a VERY WIDE berth.

IMHO, the best advice for any driver is the the one they pound into you as a motorcycle rider -- rider or driver beware! There are a lot of stupid drivers out there who represent a constant risk to your safety and you are responsible for protecting yourself from the conduct of others as best you can by driving as vigilantly (not necessarily as slow) as possible.

Remember, if they ain't near you, they can't hit you!!! That's a cardinal rule that I follow while both riding and driving.

Hey Swing....if you always speed....I assume you are NOT driving the Prius in your sig...?:D ...do those even hit 80mph?.....

Yeah, what he said. I know I already got in trouble over this and pokin fun at people's age, (sorry again Jack), but this is an enthusiast site. To expect enthusiasts to keep quiet about punching the gas would be like going onto the SmartCar forum and telling the guys there they can't compare mileage!! I never, ever, ever drive the speed limit. I pass cops at ten over. I make turns way too fast. I brake the tires loose. I drag race from stoplight to stoplight!!! I do donuts in the JiffyLube parking lot (at the behest of the manager). I follow too closely. I turn my passenger side airbag off, only because there is no switch to turn off the driver side!! I put people in danger every time I am behind the wheel, but no more so than the idiot in the minivan next to me with three screaming kids swerving all over the place!! All kinds of people drive stupid in all kinds of different ways. I drive faster than average. I am always aware of my surroundings and alert to what other drivers on the road are doing. Just because you can measure my dangerous activity with a radar gun does not mean I am being any more dangerous than the idiot who just changed lanes without looking. I look. Or the girl who has her rear-view mirror pointed at herself. My points rearward. Or the family who are more concerned with what little Billy did in the back seat than staying in their own lane. I stay between the lines.

So, what is more safe, the speeding driver who blasts it out every once in a while while no one else is around. Or the schmuck or family of schmucks who can't even travel in a straight line in traffic, but drive a Grand Caravan at the speed limit. Or the girl who would rather look at herself than at the traffic coming up behind her. Yes folks, the world is a dangerous place....and it ain't getting any safer with airbags and SmartCars. I drive fast but predictable. I don't bob and weave. I signal before I change lanes. I wear my seatbelt, and I have my mirrors adjusted properly. Sorry, my blast up to 135MPH next to another guy in a Jag doing the same thing (on the freeway) with no other cars around is way.....yes I said it, waaaaaaay safer than what many of the idiots driving at the speed limit do.

I don't know about where anyone else lives, but people driving right at the speed limit around here usually fall into a few categories....the elderly....the drunk....the lost....the otherwise preoccupied. I try to stay away from all four, by passing them at the first possible chance. In front of them means I am not left in their wake of destruction when catastrophe happens.

Greg
I certainly hope you use your toothbrush while passing!! :D

Good Post - lots of good points in there :dancing: :star:

I never speed, I never change lanes without signalling, I never look in the mirror while driving, I never talk on the cell phone, I never put makeup on while doing the speed limit, I got rid of the kid so I don't need the car seat anymore, I never change cd's or my radio station, except while using the button on the wheel, and did I say I never speed............................
