So I fixed my dreaded rack leak by putting in a reman rack. The local dealership wanted $1200+ for a new one, so I went reman for $250. So I mounted the rack, had the alignment done, and now I have about 1" of slop in the steering wheel. I know I can pull the rack and have it replaced, but I really don't want to.

Is there anyway that the slop in the gears can be tightened up, like on the older gear assemblies like the old Mopars have?

I've checked the WSM, but it only shows how to R+R the rack. Nothing more.

An inch of steering wheel slop in a thousand horse truck?? What's the issue??:D:D

Return the rack . Someone didn't put it together properly! Hate to have it fail during some pavement drifting!! Lol.

I think I may actually consider returning it, I'm sure there's a simple adjustment to move the worm gear closer to its mating gear. But I don't want to take it apart until I know what I'm doing.

Can you define exactly where the play is? Tie-rod ends? Maybe the socket assemblies? If the play is definitely in the rack ,then tearing into it will be some good learning!! lol Have fun . let us know how you make out.

The steering was 100% solid before the rack change. It's in the rack itself, I assume there is a worm gear in there that has a backlash setting that just isn't proper. If I had my old rack that didn't go in for a core return I'd pull it apart, but I won't tear this apart until I know what's all inside.
