stock heads

has anyone ever tried to have our stock heads ported and polished or any thing like this? would there be any gains? i know a guy that does them for race cars and such , just woundering if it would be worth having done , also would be putting in the comp coupe cam?
thanks nathan

I bought a set of Gen III heads and they were so nice (as in hard to find any production flaws in) I sent them back.
The heads flow 270 c.f.m. out of the box which is very good, as is. That is the flow equivalent of 337+ c.f.m. on a V-8 which are really good flow numbers in the aftermarket realm.
There can always be c.f.m. gains through porting, but QUALITY of flow, not quantity is the most important. So MAKE sure the individual doing the work is knowledgeable with Viper heads, they are...different. Don't fall into the trap of whopping c.f.m. numbers to make your choice of one porter over another. The true way to tell (but not necessarily the most convenient) is to pull the heads after some use and look at the burn pattern. It should be uniform across the piston top and the corresponding area of the combustion chamber; THAT tells the tale as well of course as the true performance numbers.

Twin-Screw for me... (cheaper too)

I'm having mine ported and polished in a couple of months along with a big cam, T&D roller rockers and hardened pushrods. I already have headers and exhuast. My builder thinks he can get another 80-100 hp out of the heads, cam, roller rockers and tune.:dontknow:

We'll see.:D
Very Interesting!

Why wouldn't Striker or Striker Racing heads be ideal for N?A applications. IF thats the case, is porting the stock heads is the only option for those who want to remain N/A (myself included)?

As mmmmmtorque stated, they gained him about 20, with an additional 15 I think coming from a cam. They were VERY mild, using the same valves as stock. They just cleaned up the runners. That was using stock valvetrain. Indy said going more on the heads, would have required new valvetrain and mmmm wasn't wanting to do that.
Exactly. My builder is upgrading the valve train, porting the heads and installing a "substantially" more radical cam than either one of the aforementioned cams.

I am also contemplating porting/polishing the intake runners and throttle body. Starting to run into a cost effectiveness decision at this point lol.

I think a set of Strikers with a matched cam and a sheetmetal intake with a larger center mounted throttle body ( in the middle of the intake with taller runners) would be the best deal. Do the Strikers have a smaller cc combustion chamber? Compression makes power and will utilize the extra flow.
