Strange noise upon start up?

I never had the noise in question on my 04 RC (20K miles). When I first bought the truck, it had the black Mopar filter on it. At the first oil change I switched to the K&N filter and still no noise. My last change I used a Mobil1 filter but switched to Royal Purple Oil and still no noise. My truck often sits for a week or so when I go out of the country and I still don't get any noise at start up?? Maybe this is just an issue specific to each vehicle.

Well today when I went out and started her up this afternoon after sitting all day yesterday with no start-up, me nor a buddy of mine heard a single noise from her like I've been describing lately :dontknow: ... Sounded like normal with that great Magnaflow rumble :rock:

Prof, I understand now that you were meaning the filter you had tried had a billet finish for looks... I was thinkin' it might've been code for some other specialized filter and I just didn't understand...

So let me ask this then, is their indeed any benefit for us to use this new Viper filter after all??? Anyone else using one now with any strange noises?? Do any of the vendors that sell 'em have any insight on what makes 'em better??

We tried to use an aftermarket billet filter that has a nice powder coat finish and a replaceable filter element and it caused the fluttering noise on two different trucks...Gary felt it was the back flow valve...but when we disabled the valve the sound persisted.

We went back to the oem mopar filter and the noise was gone immediately.

I just purchased a half dozen of the new viper filters but have not tried them yet...I may put one on tomorrow just to see if the sound returns...

Who made the filter? I was planning on going with one of THESE at my next oil change. I won't buy it if it was the same one you and Gary tried.

Friggin' A, it made the noise this evening once again ... Guess I'll go ahead and switch back to the OEM Mopar filter ASAP; I cannot take that noise on start-up

Call Gary, he has had the problem with my truck and one other. He will know the brand...it seemed more narrow (a little), and had a nice powder coated finish. We tried it twice, once with the valve in and once with the valve removed...he has probably figured out the problem by now...post what he says...please.

Weird. I asked about this a couple months ago after mine started doing it at 7,500 miles and most replies said it was the belt and/or the tensioner. Finding that hard to believe since the sound did not change when slightly revving the engine, I've left it alone.

Oddly enough, the noise started about 2 weeks after I had the pan gasket replaced due to a leak, and the tech installed the new Viper filter on it. He explained they (Mopar) found that the regular (black) Mopar filter went into by-pass mode too frequently on the Viper motor (the black filter is used on everything from a Viper, to a HEMI, to a 6-cyl) and came out with the new Viper-specific filters which had a design similar to the Mobil1 filter and, therefore, he figured I would rather have the new Viper filter on it, to which I said, "Yeah, sounds good!"

Then I come across this thread today with the majority saying it's the filter making the sound, lol. Well, if that's what it is, I think I'd rather just live with the noise than have a filter that by-passes all the time instead of cleaning the oil.

what we have found, is most of the Viper engines that have AI stamped on the timing cover, have a bypass valve that is very inconsitant, and causes a harmonic vibration that the billet filter amplifies in its internal cartridge.
this oil bypass valve isnt inclosed, so its spring starts an oscilation, and that causes the oil pressure to spike up and down. (your oil pressure gauge reads an average, not instant reading, so you dont see this flucutation in real time)
i have put some of these filters on, without a hitch on some engines, and others, it makes noise similar to a power steering rack moaning. i use one on my truck, but i have changed the by-pass valve.
honestly, on the Viper engine, i wouldnt use one, because you have a good chance of creating the dreaded filter moan.

I have the exact same noise with both the "VIPER" filter # 5037836AA and the Mopar FE292.

thats a comon sound .. i think every srt10 ive been in makes that sound when cold at start up ..

My '97 Dodge RAM 4X4 with a 318 made that sound as well. I thought it was that truck's problem. But when it showed with the SRT I knew it wasn't a Viper specific issue... Something with Dodge/Chrysler.. It never returned after I used a Mopar oil filter. Something as simple as that... Who'dah guessed?:dontknow:

I didn't have it with the factory filter, the black one Mopar #05281090.
I am going to try that one next.

I used the mobil1 oil filter.
What weight oil did you put back in it?
Was it the same weight as came out?
