ACCOKEEK, Maryland (AP) -- A car plowed into a crowd that had gathered to watch a street race on a suburban road early Saturday, killing seven people and injuring at least four, police said.

Police examine a car involved in a Maryland drag-racing crash that killed seven bystanders.

Witnesses said they had just watched two cars in the illegal street race speed past when a car without any lights on came up behind them and veered into a crowd of about 50.

"There were just bodies everywhere; it was horrible," said Crystal Gaines, 27, whose father was among the dead.

Gaines said she grabbed her child but could not help her father, William Gaines Sr., 61.

"He wasn't breathing, he wasn't moving," she said. "His body was in pieces."

A white sedan hit people standing on the side of Route 210 around 3:40 a.m., Prince George's County Police Cpl. Clinton Copeland said, but it wasn't clear whether that was one of the cars involved in the race.

A tractor-trailer that came by shortly afterward may also have struck someone on the road as it tried to avoid the crash, he said. "It's probably one of the worst scenes I've seen," Copeland said. "This is a situation that could have been avoided, and it's a very tragic situation."

Four people were taken to hospitals, Copeland said. Their conditions weren't immediately known.

Hours after the accident on the divided highway in Accokeek, bodies covered in white sheets were scattered along what police were calling a 200-yard crime scene. Some were in the road, while others were on the shoulder. Video Watch sheet-covered bodies lying along road »

The sedan came to a rest on an embankment about 150 feet from where the crowd had been. It had a crumpled front and hood, and the roof had partially collapsed. Learn about street racing »

The driver of the white sedan had been interviewed and did not appear to be seriously hurt, but a passenger was among the dead, Police Capt. Donald Frick said.

Investigators had "more questions than answers," Copeland said.

Route 210 has two lanes in each direction and traffic lights about every 150 to 200 yards in Accokeek, about 20 miles south of Washington. In that area, the road is flanked by some businesses but has little traffic in the early hours, Copeland said. E-mail to a friend

3:40am? Wtf were they doing there at that early time. I've been to street races in the past and the idiots stand right next to the cars taking off, and next to the side of road all the way down the highway. Its unreal how these people think nothing can hurt or kill them. Very sad.

tragedy...common sense isn't so common anymore. Wish people would be smart about decisions they choose.

3:40am???????????? Man you have to be really nuts to go watch a Street race at that time. I thought teenagers do that kind of crap:dontknow:

Exackly!!! I just cant imagine some dude 61 years old would be up that late on the road?????

What a waste.............this is why I choose to race at the track.

Street racing is dangerous!!More so, now than ever with the available H.P.and speeds attainable!!

Not to defend street racing (because it's illegal), but it doesn't sound like it was a street racing accident.

"Witnesses said they had just watched two cars in the illegal street race speed past when a car without any lights on came up behind them and veered into a crowd of about 50."

It sounds some idiot was following the street race with his lights off. Liberal media has to automatically attribute the accident to the street race. Again, not saying they shouldn't.....just pointing it out.

They said that the drivers where doing a burn out. Now I've spectated alot of races since when do you do a burnout at the end of the race. ussually you just turn around and do it again.

And I agree people would always get behind and infront of the car when we were burning out and I would have to clear everyone and get them off the road. Bunch of retards.

This is sad and most unfortunate -- unfortunately around here this has happened too often. Not sure though were the problem may lie -- parents, teens, those in between, bystanders :dontknow:

Not sure how I would blame the media, liberal or not, on reporting this one:dontknow:

A group of people were watching an illegal street race and were tragically hit by a person doing another illegal act. All in all it is a very tragic event. I'm not blaming anyone yet on this one. It is just a shame and the media is going to report it. We just need to filter through it and make our own call on this one.

Everybody does something illegal every day. California stop at a stop sign, drives over the speed limit, etc. Street racing has been going on since cars were made. I don't see why it's such a god awful activity just now. I don't do it anymore because I like having my car/truck in my garage, not the police impound awaiting it's crush date. People died, it is a tragedy as with any useless death. I see a time, maybe 20 years from now, emulating the society portrayed in the movie Demolition Man with Sylvester Stallone where a movie prints out shit tickets for swearing.

Sadly there was a young man killed here last night while street racing. Honda Civic versus a tree and the Civic lost. Street racing is illegal and deadly, there have been 5 kids killed street racing in Jackson since 2000.

So many people died in Hawaii street racing that they changed the punishment for speeding and racing. Your caught doing double the speed limit here.............bye bye car, hello jail, huge fines!

Street racing is bad but what really amazes me is where people decide to do that racing.... ie in traffic and on streets where people can pull out. WTF are they thinking?

Street racing is sooooo wrong.

And it is sooooo hard to not do.

What a sad story.

Update:

The white Crown Victoria drove up on the northbound lane behind the racers just as the race started. The driver was blinded by the smoke in the air from the burnout before the drag race causing the driver to plow into a crowd of spectators. That's why it looked like it had no lights on because of the smoke. The lights apparently weren't bright enough for the spectators to see through the burnt-rubber smoke. The racers left the scene and never returned. Police still don't know who they were. Charges will not be filed on the Crown Victoria driver who is now in the hospital among the injured; however, a passenger of the Crown Victoria was killed. The seemingly "star victim" of this tradegy was a woman that had her 61 year old father there along with her 13 year old daughter. AFTER 3 a.m.???????? The father was instatly killed with his body dismembered. The death toll is now at 8. SAD!!!!
