Synthetic Oils - Some clarification please

Greetings everyone. Been a while since I posted. I am not as well known as some of the nut cases on this forum, but I am sure I can hold my own.

But to be serious for a moment, I wanted to talk about a topic that has been discussed many times here that I can see.

Synthetic Oils

Question... Does it really make that much of a difference to sway from the Mobil 1? I am doing my 2nd change tomorrow and I have been using Mobil 1 0-40w. I have seen so many threads about Amsoil and Royal Purple. I actually called RP today and they do not even make a 0-40w oil. They reccommended XPR 10w40. They said I could go 8000 miles between oil changes with this stuff and I would get better gas mileage and HP. Really??? Serious? How can you really tell? Driving these things a little differently can make all the difference. Now getting 8k out of an oil for a high performance motor sounds too good to be true. I am changing mine every 3k with the mobil 1. That is what the manual states to do. Even if it is true that the RP can go 8k, I dont know if I feel comfortable with that. I did not do any research on the Amsoil so I cannot comment on it.

So please, let me hear some feedback on this. Stick with Mobil1? Change every 3k? RP? Warranty issues with using RP? Much of a difference? What???

One more thing. Oil filters... I used a K&N perfomance filter last time. This time I bought a Mobil1 filter. What is everyone else using?
 
I've used Royal Purple in other engines, and that stuff rocks....would go six months between changes, no problems, oil looked BRAND NEW....

Now, I spent too much on the truck to run any risk of voiding the warranty, so I put in Mobil....

I have heard of others using diff oils with no issue....a good, quality synthetic should work fine.l...

mobil 1 also and a few others
but I will save my comment until last on amsoil ok;)

RP is super! awesome oil,excelent properties
mobil1 the same

All sythetics are really good, and long lasting, some lasting a tad longer than others.
Just the additives are different, and the $ amount.
now if you change often like most do around 3000 miles, do you really want to spend the extra $?
and here is why.
according to RP you will gain hp , well you will ,but it will be very miniscule(is that a word?)
they did a test on a chevy dually, changed the engine oil, tranny oil, differntial oill, basically all engine oils in the truck,

they also did before and after dynos.

they gained approximatly 10 hp, but this is after all were changed.

so if youre hunting the very last hp, yeah its worth it, if you like the added protection that RP may give , yeah its worth it.

but ya gotta put the performance an $ amount together and see if its worth it for you.

As for Amsoil:confused: I would PM a fellow member here named NBT and ask his comments, ,,,,,, seriously;)

very bad experience with the stuff

As stinker said, if you like the oil, then use it, if you wanting to switch for HP reasons, then stick w/ the Mobil 1. I love mobile 1 for there engine oils....(there atf is pretty darn good too) <---advertisement for ya stinker :D :dontknow: .

Thanks for the input guys. I have the Mobil1 for my change set for tomorrow. The RP sounds like a good upgrade too but I am concerned about warranty issues. I have already upgraded to the magnaflow CB, but I am sure the dealer will not be testing my oil.

Also, do you go with 3k for the changes for both? Can you, or better yet, should you go more than 3k on any other the oils?

Also... How about filters. Anyone have any input on them?
 
Mine is 04' which is 10w-30.

I'm using Mobil 1 oil and filter. It is doing good.
 
The Mobil 1 filter looks really nice. Saw a decent write up on it so I am trying it.

3000 miles the standard for everyone here on oil changes? Even using RP?


There a reason Mopar changed from 10w-30 to 0w-40?

i am with Big Perm i spent to much on the truck to risk voiding the warranty so i am just going to stick with the mobil 1
 
depends on ya drivin bro, if you do alot of highway extended periods like hours

then you could extend to 4500 or so.

around town, normal driving and so, stick with 3000

bad conditions , stop and go constantly, dirty area, less than 3000.

Mobil 1 makes an excellent filter

not really a reason, except for who knows:D

dont worry too much about oil and warranty, synthetic oil is awesome, and they would have a hard fight on their hands with that one:D
 
don't forget, dealers "recommend" oil changes such that your engine fails shortly after the warranty is up.

The 10-30 is too light and does not provide enough protection.

I personally run Mobile 1 15-W-50, as it provides better cushion and has a higher sheer strength.

You might loose a HP or 2 but the motor will last a lot longer, especially if run hard.

Very interesting.... 15w-50... Personally, I would rather keep the ponies I have so I think I would stick with the 0w-40.

Thanks again for everyones input, I appreciate it. You hear so much about this product and that one. Mobil 1 is proven and been around for a long time now. One day, after warranty days are gone, I can see myself experimenting with RP. My friend has a 99 "L" and swears by it. It is so nice to finally see the front of his truck in my rear view mirror. I was sick of looking at his small box over the hood of my hemi.
 
I have used Mobil 0-40 since the truck was brand new.

I like it.

Because the engine oil is always subjected to the same contaminants,
whether it is regular or synthetic oil, I don't think an extended oil change interval is a good idea. I tried it once, and the oil stank like old oil.

An extended interval with synthetic in a transfer or diff. seems o.k. to me though.

On my last oil change I tried the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30. I is good for 15K miles but I'm going to change it at 5K intervals. When I was using the 0W-40, it seemed like I was always under the truck changing oil every 3K miles. I may go back to the 0W-40 next oil change to see if there is any difference.
 
Ted May Is the Only guy that touches my truck He Is a Viper Certified tech And has worked on over 100 viper motors. He Clearly reccomends Amsoil for all the Viper motors
 
guys also a good thing anyone can do is do a oil sample

i do one on my rig every year.

all you do is get a sample of oil when ya drain it and send it off

it will tell ya if the bearings are going bad, or any wear at all anywhere in the engine.

i get my at the catapillar dealership, so you may have ask your local NAPA or so , they should know where ya can get the kit from
