I decided to take out the rear helper spring on my QC today, and all I can say is Dang...............Why didn't anyone say more about this before, not only does it look better, but it rides like a cadilac now, if I woild have known it was going to do all that I would have done it the day I brought it home from the dealer ship!! I already had a drop shackle on it so all i had to do was remove the helper, took about an hour, really simple!!! I am going to get one of those helper springs that sits on top of the leaf springs later in case i tow anything...

you mean the lowest spring which was pointing down right?
I thought it came into action only under load? Supprised it makes a difference without any load on it....
Anyways glad you like it bro

Thats kinda what I was thinking too,I think I'm going to yank mine out too:rock:

Thats what i thought, maybe its all in my head but it feels softer and my rear end doesnt bounce around over railroad tracks or dips in the road anymore!!:dontknow:

Hey yall know who started this trend? Oh yeah, it was ME! Truck sits nice and level! Glad you like it Scott.

Sure was and i really appreciate it, thank you..... :congrats: :D

That was the first dodge I saw, I was going to do it on the red truck after I took off the McGaupheys drop, which didn't work out FOR ME, or Eddie.

Installed some drop shackles but it wasn't enough.

After seeing EMT's truck it made me get off my tush and get'er down. :) Thanks again hoss.

I'm pretty sure that If anyone ever talks about the shackle either me or EMT will get on here and scream about the overload. Must've missed you.

Got Pics?

Anyone got a How-to on this. May do it this weekend.

Overload spring

Took mine out and added drop shackel. Indeed it soften the ride and lowered it but it also had bad wheel hop. I changed to a pro lowering kit and put the overload back in. All is well no wheel hop but now the rear bottoms out on the housing when I hit a large bump.

I had my little troll help me w it, but it is really simple to do make sure you have 11/16 and a 21, or 22 something like that not sure exactly cuase it was dark and had some rusty sockects, but some deep well and a wrench that fit the u bolts, some PB penitrating oil, though they were not that tough to loosen, and some jack stands for safty. Lift rear of truck up, we did the whole rear end at once because we had a really big air jack, but lift it up place jack stands under frame let axle hang loose, clamp the leaf springs you r not taking out w vise scripts or c clamp, then just loosen all the nuts you see and pry off the bottom helper spring, just put it all back the way you took it off, sorry i'm not good at telling how to do stuff like this, but really once you get the wheel off its pretty self expalnatory, you cannot really mess this up..

take the shackles to a welding shop have them extended about an inch, and add a better bumpstop to the frame;)

O.K. guys let me tell yall a lil about that " helper spring" / "Overload spring" the reason trucks have them is to prevent axle wrap. The cause of one previous poster's wheelhop. They are there for that reason, to prevent the spring from trying to de-arch itself under the load from the axle. The ride will be smoother and it will take bumps better, but it will hate launching due to axle wrap. That's the reason the cal-tracs were developed as were "traction bars" back in the day on any leaf spring ride with power. I as well want mine lower but don't want to sacrifice all of the above unless I or someone creates the perfect shackle/leaf spring combo, with maybe less spring pack, higher psi for tight ride yet low slung look. I'ma jigga rig sumpin' you bet.

That actually makes sense. Don't really want to deal with wheel hop, either.

you can take the oem springs and have them dearched to the spec you desire.

I always have wondered if a set of 68 to 70 b-body HEAVY DUTY LEAF SPRINGS can be used in the truck. One side has 7 springs and the other has 6 springs to help launch the Hemi cars. Even if the longest spring was longer, maybe the rest of the spring pack can be added in. I will go measure the lenght and width on my Charger than on the truck. I wonder if lets says they are 2" shorter then re-use the stock shackle. You would get the desired drop but all the benifits of the heavy duty springs. Just thinking out loud.

It's funny the post I refered to about getting the truck inspected and seeing a spring removal for the first time. Me and the Girls went to micky D's to play in the play ground. That guy who I havnt seen since that day comes in just to tell me how good the truck looks now............... it's like rain, on you wedding day ..... isn't it ironic... :)

I did a burn out, small one in my buddies drive way yesturday and it left a axle tramp mark, but I never fell the tramping.

The guy told me to remove the first leaf and leave the overload in...... maybe that would stave off axle tramp. And allow you to overload the chassis a bit more than with out the overload.

Remove lower helper springs, install Cal-Tracs...perfect, call Stinker.

AND the Cal-Tracs look bad ass under your truck!!!

One thing you need to watch for is after the removal the springs will sag after a while and will not handle loads very well. Just my experience with lowering vehicles.
