    New to VTCOA,

I'll copy this to a Thread later. I have a 05 Reg Cab Ram SRT-10 and at 76k my Tranny died. At 74k I installed a SPEC Twin Disc SST Clutch, and at 76k, I couldn't get it to go into 5th, so I took the Truck to an AAMCO located in Pasadena,CA.

I had them change the Tranny fluid not Cheap either in hope that would resolve the problem- No Such Luck! Next I had them drop the Tranny and
dismantle it, these Guys are Great- Let me get right the action with them.
Once open, it was evident that someone else had worked on the Tranny at some point and didn't do a good job.

Their were only two parts from the Tranny that were re-usable, and that was 4th and 6th gears, everything else needed to be replaced. I looked into Tick Performance, RPM, etc. Bottom line was that T56 Magnum was going to run about 5k excluding installation.

Initially I had been talked into rebuilding the T56 by AAMCO's lead Tech. I sure because he didn't know what to expect with a TR6060 swap. Anyhow, the
shop manager became ill right about this time, and took off a week to recover.
In the mean time nothing was being done with my Truck, so I started doing more research on the TR6060 swap.

What I found was that a late model Viper T6060 Tranny is a Plug and Play alternative to the T56 or the T56 Magnum. Because the Intermediary Plate on the Viper TR6060 Tranny is about a 1/2 inch thicker than that of the T56, it makes the overall length of the Viper Tranny longer by about a 1/2 inch. The Viper Tranny uses the same Bell Housing as the SRT-10, and bolts right up to the SRT-10's Viper motor without any modifications. The rear Tranny support is slotted to accept a slightly longer Tranny. No modifications to the Drive Line were required either.

I almost forgot to mention that I had to use the Tail Housing off my T56 because TR6060's is a little different in the way the protective housing bolts to the rear of the Tranny. The Tail housings are interchangeable.

So I began to search for a Viper T6060, and located one on eBay for $2,250 it was suppose only require a couple of Syncros. I negotiated a sale price of $1,750 plus another $230 freight from GA. to CA. Five days later it arrives and my Guys break it open and it's condition is as bad as my T56. So I call the Guys I bought from and negotiate another $1,000 off the price so now I am into this Viper TR6060 for roughly $1,000. I tell the Guys at AAMCO to price out my parts to rebuild my Viper TR6060, of course I told them I wanted Carbon Fiber Syncros, New Bearings , etc- Spare no expense at this point.

Total parts came to $2,980.22 and that's AAMCO's cost and AAMCO's policy is to mark the parts of any Tranny they build in-order to provide a Warranty. So that would make this $5,960.44 plus another $1,000 for the removal, replacement, and rebuild. So that makes AAMCO's bill to me would probably be even more with New U-Joints. That's a Grand Total of roughly $7,900 Dollars.

We Test fit the Viper TR6060 Tranny and it fit perfectly. AAMCO offered to build and install and Warranty their Labor for 12mos. or 12K miles if I bought the parts. I called the Guys at Anaheim Gear, they already had the build sheet for this project. Parts were $2,980.22 with sales tax and shipping it came to
$3,147.18, bring my project cost down to roughly $4,150 plus another $1,000 for AAMCO's charges.

So the moral of the story is if you want to save yourself a lot of Angst, maybe you should consider a T56 Magum probably cheaper in the long run.

    But I am happy now!

    Best regards,
    Jax

GREAT write up!! Thank you for taking the time to share this information.

How do you like the ratio's of 5th and 6th compared to the original T56?

    Cheers!
