Hey folks, lately i've been noticing my tranny grinding gears when i shift
from 1st to 2nd around 4500k - 5200k... I mean, i can shift into 2nd
but i get a little bit of gear grinding then i'm good. Also, it doesn't do
this unless i floor it.
I assume that means my syncros are torn to hell?

Regards,

Andrew

Sounds like it could be synchro rings.
I'll trade you the grinding manual for a billet auto that only lasted 7500 miles! ;)

That sounds about right, great to see you again Andrew.

hahah i think i'll have to pass:D :D ;) So since my truck will be
decommissioned during the winter i figure that is when i can do some work..
How much will a tranny upgrade cost me? I know it depends on what i
want to do but if i were to upgrade just the syncros and possibly fix/replace
the missing teeth on 2nd what's a good ballpark number? I've been
having trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd for a while now.. I mean, when i
shift from first to second at high RPMs the 2nd gear gate locks me out so
i miss the shift... will new syncros/upgraded syncros help this issue?

Check out www.sixspeedsinc.com, they offer a few different packages available to rebuild these trannys. I bought the 5A rebuild package $1014, I recommend to get new shift rail bushings and also the bronze fork pads for ALL the shift forks. I lost reverse because of the crappy stock fork pads, now I never will because of the bronze ones. I rebuilt it myself, not too hard although I am a mechanic. Six speeds service kinda sucks, there shipping really really blows, and I got used retaining rings in my kit, but the main components are good and my tranny works good now.

RONNIE try talking to HTS Transmissions................... Real knowledgeable guy Dusty

Thanks!

I have a local guy here that builds autos for the 2000 h.p. guys (and he did mine) but he isn't sure why it failed...
I mean, it makes 560+ wheel but not 1,560 wheel. It should have been a.o.k. with the parts I bought...

Where is HTS??

Michigan but has certified installers all over.

He did the tranny in the bully dog diesel truck on pinks 2 years ago. He's a 727 expert. These are 727's with OD units :)

Yup, that is exactly what they are. I have some GOOD parts in mine but it won't hold 2nd for some reason.
I haven't had a good 1/4 mile pass yet this season since I put the Strikers and cam in...
They are a reasonably simple tranny and there must be a reason for the failure.
I will give him a call.

He gave me a lot of info on second gear when mine went out............... I bought a billet 4.6 (?) ratio lever instead of the 5.1 something about the 5.1 even thou it is bigger and exerts more force it messes something up. He said a servo upgrade the lever a valve body would hold NA hp all day, maybe upgrade to red clutch's or a less (bigger) disc hub..... I think its a 4 disc instead of 5 something about the 5 disc being to thin.

Sounds just like the conversation I had with Joe at Westminster Trans today. He is thinking the 5.0 lever releases too slow and the overlap is killing the band. He also recommended a 4.6
He also mentioned a larger servor and the RED band material.
I already have more clutches than stock.
I will give it a shot bigike!
It is SO easy to make good power with these engines but I think the auto application is too new and there isn't a lot of the right info out there yet on them.

I think the drag radials put the tranny into full blown grunt conditions and is no doubt making it work extra hard.

But it WILL get sorted out...

Cool Ron.

Yeah Dusty seems to believe that these trannies are good for 600 to 700 HP.

And I believe that is what he said about the 5.0, The 4.6 is a HUGE chunk of aluminum that will not flex or break.
