I'm following my plan on mods to the "T". Today completed the next step. I had a TransGo shift kit installed when I had the 15,000 (actually 16,560 on the truck) mile fluid/filter and band adjustment done. There are 2 levels of increased shift firmness available in the kit. The only guy I trust to work on my transmission suggested the first level of increase so that's what I opted for. Shifts are noticeably firmer but not so much more than stock that they attract negative attention or are uncomfortable. The torque converter also locks in firmer. Not knowing what to expect, a positive surprise is that the shifts under light acceleration are at a higher mph now. One thing I'd adapted to in my truck but disliked was the very low mph 1-2 shift under light acceleration. It's noticeably higher now which for me improves driveability.

I asked the technician when I picked up my truck for his perpective on how often I get the fluid/filter changed. Considering how I drive my truck, and annual mileage at about 18,000, he suggested bringing it in about this time each year (just pre-cool weather/race season). He commented that the fluids seem to last much better than in the past but the friction modifiers and other additives in the fluid degrade over time, especially when driven hard. I'll follow his advice. When I take it in next year I may get the shift firmness increased to the next level.

Sending the above isn't with the intent of starting a debate. Just passing on my experience with the shift kit (positive so far), and intent on service frequency (this guy has been in the transmission business many years, has an impeccable reputation, has never steered me wrong, and is a racer).

After my first trip to the track this year I'll update my run times and mph in my signtaure to reflect added mods (add them too) since last cool weather and last trip to the track. They'll include M&H drag radials/light rear rims, JMB CAI, and TransGo shift kit.

Thats a subject that (I Know) Alot of members will be interested in!!:D
Knowing what I know,I would of recommended 2nd stage(1st stage is a r.v./tow upgrade)2nd stage is an improved shift,(street/strip setup) and 3rd stage is race,(firmest shift)
Just my opinion,Of course,But definitely a subject that most Q/C owners will be interested in!:) GOOD LUCK

How much was the transgo kit without the labor and do you have a part number?

Hey old guy I plan to get one also in November. I know this will help the tranny last longer because it will shift smoother and slipp less possibly.
But does it help your ET in the 1/4 mile???

Wait I have a dumb question again. I thought shift kits were for work trucks that tow a lot and carry heavy loads:dontknow:

nope i know they use them in a lot of drag cars ....quicker shifts...better ets

This is something that I am very interested in!!

How will this affect towing my jetski??

The guy at the transmission shop ordered it. I didn't check his price because he's always done me right. I have 2 links as sources. One had it for $63, the other for $56. Both were plus shipping.

Won't know until cool weather comes and I make another trip. I hope it will result in a repeatable minimal gain if from nothing else the reduced shift durations.

No negative effect. If anything it should help minimize any negative impact to the tranny (can't imagine any regardless considering weight of a jet ski)from firmer/quicker torque converter lockin and same for teh shift into overdrive.

I got a chance to do some testing this morning.

Shifts are definitely quicker but only slightly firmer. There were 2 options to improve shift firmness. I opted for the 1st increase (drilling 1 hole). I'll drive it a year and decide when I go back in next year for fluid and filter as to whether to go for the highest firmness (drilling a 2nd hole). For now I'm very pleased.

Accelerating as slowly as I can, the 1-2 shift is at 12mph. Accelerating with slow moving traffic (keeping pace) in town where the speed limit was 40, the 1-2 shift is at 20mph. Accelerating with slow moving traffic, the 2-3 shift is at 30mph. Driving at a steady speed, it'll stay in 2nd to 26mph. Full throttle acceleration is still per the Stage II PCM setting, about 5950rpms. The 3-4 shift and torque converter lock-in is still by 45mph under light acceleration.

I'll get and post more data on downshifts but I know it's dropping into a lower gear now than before from a higher speed when I mash it to the floor. I don't recall exactly but know I quite often would race folks on the road from a 20 to ensure that when I accelerated it would drop into first. This morning it was consistently dropping into first from 30+ mph. More data later.

Some folks have posted that after the 15,000 mile service for fluid, filter, and band adjustments their tranny seemed to search for gears. Mine didn't before the service and still doesn't.

My primary reason for getting the shift kit was to hopefully imrpove the life of my transmission. That'll be difficult to judge. I'll just assume the claims are valid.

My secondary reason for the install was to get firmer shifts (even though they were already firm). They are definitely firmer but only slightly. For sure the shift duration is shorter.

A hopeful benefit is that the shorter shift durations will result in consistently lower times at the track. I know any gain will be minimal but consistenly seeing a repeatable .02 would still be an improvement.

Unexpected benefit is the higher mph upshifts under light acceleration, and downshifts into a lower gear from a higher mph than previously when at full throttle.

More info.....We had a little bit of a cool front move through our area last night. Temp. this morning was 68 and humidity was down a little. At 1/2 to 2/3 throttle acceleration I now chirp the tires on the 1-2 shift every time.
