Turnaround: Mercedes posts May sales record

Global sales of Mercedes cars (including Smart) were up by 17 percent in May 2006, to a record 112,700 units, the automaker announced today. In the first five months of 2006, sales of Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Smart passenger cars totaled 508,500 units, a nine-percent increase over the same period last year. The S-Class also set a sales record (8,200 vehicles) in May. The Leftlane Perspective: Has Dieter Zetsche succeeded in getting Mercedes back on track? It may be too soon to say, but it looks promising.

This is good news. Daimler had been losing money while Chrysler was making it. Hopefully Zeitch has turned it around after the departure of the last CEO.
