I've had my B&G PCM tuned for 93 octane for several months now and have noticed a bit of a "rattle" at WOT or close to WOT at RPM above 4K. I was thinking it might be something called sympathetic harmonic vibration. My reason for thinking this is the new PCM, in my truck at least, causes a bit more engine noise and vibration. I was thinking the noise was some heat shroud shaking or something of that sort. Its hard to pinpoint where the noise is coming from exactly due to the racket the truck makes at WOT anyways. I've never heard a motor knock at WOT so I don't know it this is similar. At idle and free reving theres nothing. Well, me being the lazy ass that I am, I decided to just go to the local Mobil Gas Station and pump in some CAM2 100 octane unleaded racing fuel. I was on Empty with my fuel light on so I figured the timing couldn't be better. After putting in only 7 gallons (it's $7.70 a gallon) I took her for a spin. I drove about 2 miles to let the gas mix and get fully pumped into the motor. I ran WOT twice through a few gears(and yes I hit 3rd!!!) and noticed no "rattle". Now the air is very cold and dense tonight which could make the difference. It currently 36 degrees. The water temp was at 200 degrees with the oil at 180 ish. Everything seemed fine with no rattle. Before I was able to duplicate the "rattle" with the oil at 160 and the water at 180 on a 40 ish degree day. I'm heading to work for a few hours of OT and will try and duplicate the rattle with the CAM2.

BTW, here's a description of CAM2 - "Cam 2" is the generic name used for Sunoco Race Fuels. You can expect the same consistent high quality performance from Cam 2 Racing Gasoline that you get from Sunoco Race Fuels because the names are interchangeable. It is the same product, made in the same facility by the same people. We use this name wherever the "Sunoco" brand name cannot be used, such as gasoline outlets which carry a competing brand of street gasoline. Cam 2 is available in 110, 112, and 116 octane leaded, and 100 and 104 unleaded. Please refer to the specs and MSDS for the Sunoco fuels listed above.

Sounds like you were experiencing detonation before and that the PCM flash timing is too far advanced. I would send it back and have it pulled back a few degrees. Run the stock PCM until then....

I think what you were hearing was some slight detonation. I had it with my Stage 2. I sent my PCM back and had it re-flashed for 91 octane. I run only 93 in the truck and still get some every once in awhile. I'm sure the 100 octane would shut it up. Mine's a B&G too.

yeah i get it once in awhile with my stage II but i havent installed the 170 t-stat yet, hope it will help and yes the pcm is set for 93 octane and thats all i run.

bingo, stage II is too far advanced big guy, send it back set it for 91, and you loose virtually no power

When I had my pcm flashed, Dan at DC Perf. told me that they only flash for 91 octane now...............his reasons were that the gas supply/quality varies so much across the country that it is safer to just flash for a 91 octane. You never know what your really getting at some gas stations.

I hate how they re-charge you to downgrade the program!!

Call Dave at B&G and just explain what your hearing. He will most likely say send it back for the 91. That's what I did and there was no additional charge except the shipping part. I think most of the time they are pretty cool about it.

I also have a B&G Stage II flash. I had some detonation at WOT at first. Now I always fill up at about a half a tank and add 2 gallons of Sunoco 110 octane, $5,00 per gallon here. Now I never hear detonation, but you can smell the racing fuel from the exhaust. I will skip the racing fuel about every 5th fill-up so it won't get to overloaded. My truck runs great now.

Thanks SilvrSRT10 and HOT RAM, I'll have to call B&G and see what they say.

Just an update - Today, again I had no detonation as I took the truck for a spin on my way to the gym. I stopped and put in 16 gallons of 93 Octane on my way there. On my way home after the truck ran for a few minutes, I again had no detonation at WOT. I figure I'll just mix the two using about 7 gallons of the racing fuel with the remainder being 93. This should work and I'll follow up with B&G about the 91 tune. Before I switch out the PCM though, I want to do a dyno pull to see what the truck is making with the 93 tune then do another with the 91 tune, just to see.

Another update, I took the truck out today and got some detonation under WOT while pulling onto the Interstate! I was able to duplicate it twice more just to be sure. I don't get how in the hell I'm getting detonation while running 7 gallons of 100 Octane unleaded racing fuel with 16 gallons of 93 Octane!!! I'd gonna sent the PCM back to B&G and get the 91 OCtane tune, enough is enough!! Its not worth me spending $5 - $8 per gallon on fuel each fill up!!

The rattaling noise isn't to loud but how likely is it that I've done some sort of damage to the motor? I've probably opened her up 20 - 30 times since getting the PCM and got light detonation most of the time? Like I said, the sound was never very loud and the truck ran fine!

Probably none. A little light rattle shouldn't hurt it. I just don't like hearing it.

I use torco, 24 oz with each fill up. completely eliminates the knock.
