What is our bucket Airspeed?

At what speed (other then 0) does the truck use the least amount of gas? Basiclly what speed provides max range?

I would say that it depends on how many Bastages you have pushing :D :dontknow:
 
When jack and I did the trip cross country, I noticed 80-90 averaged us better then 70-80 or 90-100

With our large frontal area , the best mileage should occure around 65mph, I knwo in my rig , the western star, it has a frontal area larger than most, in it, the best mileage is about 68mph, I can go up 5 mph and loose .5mpg
 
I found about the same thing as Stinker, about 65 MPH. However I can NOT drive that slow for very long.

If there were some kind of chart I could interpolate it for ya Smoke!!:D But, if ur worried about Gas-Have you heard of the the Fitch Fuel Catalyst??? Cause I was wondering the same thing since I'm gonna be goin to San Diego soon...
 
If you are going to take a long trip of any mileage and want the best fuel mileage, there are a few things to help.

Air up the tires to full capacity such as if it calls for 44psi take it there, less rolling resistance, but harder ride.

Run air at low setting with recirculate on , this keeps it resonably cool inside, but also keeps the compressor from kicking on so much.

Avoid hard starts, take it slow on starts.

use a bed cover, if ya dont have one just buy a piece of plywood and set it at an anlge inthe bed, restin on tail gate.

Stay at one speed! use cruise as often as possible.

and dont leave the truck rinning when stopped for coffe or drinks or fuel ups.

I'm sure there is more, but this is all I can think of at the moment.

I'm not worried about the gas. But the roads I travel daily have speed limits of 45 to 55 depending on the road. Mostly straight shot with no lights. I was wondering if driving 45 would net better MPG the 50 or 60 better then 55. You get the idea. If I had a chart I could do the same. We have them for our aircrafts. Max range/max endurance etc.

At that low of speeds Smoke , no i dont think it will, not enough air resitance to cause a problem I wouldnt think. But practice slow starts and a light pedal and that may help.

I'm not so much trying to save gas. But if I have my choice of driving between 45-60 I'm just wondering which speed provides the least amount of fuel consumption.
 
I would think the difference would be in the small amounts, tenths actually, not enough to matter I wuldnt think.:dontknow:

One of the biggest things I have found(which i do this all the time with my mazda trying to get the last tenth so far, and normal driving gets it 23mpg, and when I REALLY try I get 28mpg) is tire pressure and gettin the go off the line, seems taking it easy from a start helps trmendously. along with tire pressure, and oh , check fuel filter and chang it every second oil change.

I'm with ya, Bill. :D

On this most recent road trip (over 860 mi. so far), I've found that about 70-75mph is pretty optimal.

Another Tip: Keep the tank full.

BTW Stinker- it's illegal to fill up while the engine is running. :)

Where is the fuel filter on these things and how hard is it to change?
 
I'll get you a pic when I get back from the store, but should be on the frame rail under drivers side, but I'll look first.
 
If I have the energy when I get home tonight I will get into this. But there is a "Sweet Spot" rpm that the engine is most efficient.

That is why some newer (Mini, and Nissan Morano) cars are going to the CVT transmissions. The sooner you can get the engine to that rpm range, and the longer you can hold it there, the better your fuel mileage will be.

Don't worry about it today. Sounds like you just need some time for Tony. Maybe over the weekend someone else can chime in on how to change the fuel filter.

hey stink what do you average on yours we run 450 mercedes engines right now with 3 different gear ratios, all are different as far as fuel mileage goes. also have 22.5 low pros on some and 24.5 low pros you out to see what we get out of some trucks even to the northwest but we run them anywhere from 58mph to 65 mph we do have century class trucks a little more aerodynamic than yours. daddy always told me to build a bigger fire youll need more fuel you can usa that as an analogy.

I have the Fitch in both of my motorcycles, and helped about 0.01%.
