what the hell is it and how do i get it off

Hey, i'm cleaning my rims for the car show next week(i'll post pics don't worry);)
and i can't get this crap off.. i've actually gotten all the bad stuff off(Tar,etc)
but can't shake what looks like rusted aluminum? I've tried some nylon pads
but that just starts to scratch... Any suggestions?

Try Never Dull, most auto supply shops have it...comes in a small can...it is a roll of cotton with a non-abrasive solvent...seems to work wonders on my wheels.

That's what I was gonna say!

Works well, and less elbow grease than steel wool.

Don't rub hard, it'll clean it, just keep going back over it.
 
Maybe try a claybar while you're at it. . .
 
I had it...I used 800 grit sand paper...or maybe it was 600....either way. Then applies some metal polish/wax and it worked for over a year with no problems / corrosion.

Just to clarify, it ISN'T the wheels corroding. Its the brake dust that's managed to adhere itself to the wheels. :)
 
alright, thanks for the info. i'm gonna run to pepboys and get some never dull
see how that works out then if it doesn't get it all i'll go with RedSrt007's
sandpaper bit.. :rock:

that looks like the inner part of the wheel. i clean mine with brake dust remover... they look like new in a few seconds.
 
I have the same thing it is pitting in the rim and the brake dust is in the pits. Good luck cleaning it as soon as you get it off the dust just goes right back in the pitting. The only fix I think is to some how sand down the rim so there is no more pitting, but I'm to scared to do this because that might damage the rims coating. I took mine into the stealership and they will only cover pitting on the outside portion of the rim not the inside. Good luck let me know if you come up with a fix.

Hey, just finished up for today.. I have mixed results and opinions about what
i did.. here we go:

So i left you guys with a post saying i was going to pepboys to get some
'Never dull' and '800 grit sandpaper' Bought both came back home and started
to work on the wheel again. Also, before the picture i posted was taken
i had used bug & tar remover and a steel wool pad to clean the rim..
Anyways, i took the prof's advice to heart and pulled some never dull out of
the can. Worked it for about 30 mins. with light to heavy pressure . No results.
Decided to take Reds advice and pull the sandpaper bit. Worked fairly well
and almost unnoticeable when close up. completely gone from about a foot
away!

so i did the other wheel with sandpaper and went over it with never dull
and it looked pretty damn good. also degreased my engine :rock: i let it run
for about 15 mins. cleaned up any puddles of water and parked it in the garage...

Should i be concerned about water under the IM? it's not alot just a little
puddle inbetween the webbing.. less than an 1/16 inch in height.

Nah, no concern... It will dry up. :)
 
Had the same problem. I used Meguiar's Cleaner Wax and it took it off and prevents it from coming back. It's a little work, but it does the job and protects the wheel.:rock:

Did you put anything on the wheel to prevent any further pitting? I'd be inclined to put some kind of clear coating on it to keep the weather out.

I can verify ViperTruck2933's testimony after I saw it 2 weeks ago. I thought he just washed the truck...the wheels were that clean.

I can also verify that the EBC greens leave lots of brake dust on the wheels :mad: but also seem to stop a bit better :dontknow:
 
SANDPAPER! i hope your wheels aren't clearcoated, were clearcoated wheels an option?:confused:
