The 10 is going back to the dealer soon and I may be looking into a diesel truck. Which would you guys prefer? I am thinking and 04-06 Duramax with Allison tranny or a CTD...That being said, yes the truck will see a fair share of mods. But I would like to get in the 15-18mpg around town and 20mpg on the highway @ 70mph. After all the problems our trannys have I am leary of their longevity, and have read that the allison in a 06 chevy is very stout (at just above stock levels) and reliable. I know the Cummins is a great engine, but I also like the comfort and interior of the Chevy/GMC.
BTW...It going to get lowered, leveled, 24s and run in the 11's...just going to take a while to get there.

so whatcha think?????

The mileage you wish is very doable! My dad's 04 Cummins 3500 has an Airaid CAI, Bullydog computer, Bulldog 6" catback and is averaging 26 mpg @ 70 mph on 33" tall tires. And usually 16-17mpg in town.

Is it a 48RE auto, or does he have a manual?

Nope. It still shifts strong. Not sure if the previous owner beefed it up or not. Bought it with 108K miles on it. It's got about 111K on it now.

He wasn't nervous with that kind of mileage on it?

I don't guess he was? He bought it mainly for repo-ing. There will be a Sneeker hidden wheel lift unit installed beginning tomorrow. That way when repo-ing a vehicle, all he has to do is back up to it. It is all controlled on the inside of the cab.

That isn't a lot of mileage. I'd have no issue picking up a 3/4//1 ton diesel with that mileage. The duramax/allison has proven a good combination though if you look closely you'll need to beef up the allison with HP gains to the Duramax. The only diesel I'd stay away from in the current configuration is what Ford has out now. Even suppliers are looking to sue Ford over quality issues.

Yeah, I don't mind buying one with 100k miles on it. Worst case is a tranny rebuild as long as the rest of the truck is in good shape. Just trying to research them, both seem to be strong truck!

dude cummins all the way... my buddy has an 04 cummins QC 4x4 running a PPE tuner,4inch exhaust. an i want to say a boost fooler.. an a power puck stacked hes got 500 buck tied up in programers and what not.. he was pushing 540hp an 1100tq....he had his tranny rebuilt everything billet. had that done for 3 grand...an the tranny didn't need to be rebuilt but he had it done just for safe of mind.. an it runs like a bat outta hell...an gets 21mpg on the highway ! lol..... he keeps saying hes gonna be able to out runmy truck one day and i keep telling him it's gonna have to go on a diet first lol.. i think he gave 20k for it wih 75k miles on it..

and i have a tranny hook up from the guy who built his tranny

we have 6 duramax's in our fleet, two 04's, one 05's, and three 06's.. the 04's are pushing 130k miles and are still going strong. we have a 01f250 and it stays in the shop hell we had to drop it off today b/c of an oil leak POS!! duramax's are the shat..

hey be carefull the diesel fuel is more expensive then gas.

Yeah if I can get 20mpg then its worth it. Even with diesel being what it is Premium isn't that far behind. Switching to diesel will still save me money!!!!

From what my friends say about the Cummins and the duramax is the Cummins is alot better on fuel after just a couple simple mods,CAI,exhaust, programmer, etc

Thats sounds like what I am looking for! is there a difference in the 02-06 years?

Hey Carlos;

You have seen mine, and your welcome to take it for a drive if you like.

Its an 07, with the 6.7L cummins, I average 14-16mpg in town, and 20+ highway.

I tow a trailer that is 16,000lbs, and it does it without sweating, and still gets around 11mpg doing so. I have the 6 speed AutoShift tranny, not sure what the numbers are.

And the new cummins are SUPER SUPER quiet, compared to the older stuff.

The only thing I have changed is adding a AirAid Airbox, but I plan on putting on a DPF Back pipe, larger intercooler, and the Juice Box Edge Controller sometime.

Now, its not a tire burner, by any means... but it does have some nutz.

If you goona do mods to it... stay with Cummins or PowerStroke, from what I have heard the Duramaxes dont take well to mods.

My stock Cummins, way outperforms my modded powerstroke that I had... so I cant wait to see what the cummins will do for me once I mod it some...

Maybe I will swing by a drive her some time, Plus it will give you a chance to drive the viper!

I have had 3 Dodge Cummins powered pickups, a 90, 93, and 99. Loved them all, and would not hesitate to buy another if I needed one.
