Which shift kit?

I wanted to do a TransGo shift kit, but read a lot of reviews on other (diesel) truck forums and it seems to be hit or miss. Someone mentioned a company called 'Superior' and I contacted them asking if their kit would work in the 48re in the viper truck. They said

'the k48re is not a full performance kit, it's a correction kit, you can use the k080 servo with the kit and it works well in performance applications tho. that is based on feedback from our many users. if you choose to install it let us know your results. my opinion it should be fine and results positive.'

So my question is, does anyone have experience with these companies or know which one is better? I'm mainly looking to increase performance/improve/protect my transmission.

:dontknow:

I went with the transgo kit and then decided to go with the Suncoast valve body w/ transgo shift kit.....Seems to work in my truck.. It got rid of the 1,2,1,2 hunting and shifts much better/ harder.....I am still not satisfied with the 48RE trans and am looking for a spare to build myself....All in all it is something I would do again...

it all depends on whom you have put the kit in, get a jack leg to do it, you get jack leg results, pay for someone good, you get a good job

Is this more of a general statement or specifically for the TransGo? I wouldn't even know where to begin finding a 'good' transmission shop around here (MD/DC/VA). Since I've been ripped off so many times in the 2 years I've lived here, I'm going to wait til I get to San Antonio.... any recommendations?

no actually I was pretty serious, check the guy doing the install or ask before hand his experience, if he gets ruffled, then find someone else, a person that is confident in his job is not gonna mind you asking a question as sort

also one thing to ask is if they can adjust the firmness of the kit, someone that is good at shift kits will straight off say yes, someone not sure.................want know how to answer.

and they are adjustable.

its good jsut to ask general questions , a good tech will jsut walk thru them like butter, if they stumble, , you start walkin;)

I would contact Dusty Hawk at HTS Transmission and get his valve body,10 times better then a shift kit,IMO. Thats what I'm running and it works killer!!!

What exactly is the difference, can they be combined?

Transgo has a very simple approach: Bang the 1-2 shift at wide open throttle then soften the other shifts.

It's crude but it works. I have one in mine.

i would vote for the T56 shift kit

Ahhhh... thanks for the information, I think I may just go with the HTS valve body. It seems like it may give some performance enhancement to the transmission, but I don't know much of anything about automatics.

Does anyone that has used the HTS VB have any input? Such as, noticeable improvements, problems,...

I have the HTS valve body. It shifts rather hard. Some guys have broken their driveshaft with this valve body. If you want really firm shifts, this is the way to go. Even the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts are rock-hard firm. It is a bit obnoxious, but it does work well. I have put about 15K miles on the tranny since I put the valve body in, and all is working well. Sometimes I wish it would be a little more reasonable at light throttle. But it is awesome when I want to bark them in 2nd.

sounds good WOT when i'm ready i think i'm just going to get Dusty to do a full build for me to do things right and start with the weakest link.....Do you think you gainied any at the track with your "tranny upgrades"?

Is the valve body the only thing you added? That sounds like exactly what I'm looking for, which is borderline obnoxious shifts, not neck snapping but noticeably different than stock. Thanks for the insight.

Haven't taken the truck to the track, but with slicks on, this would definitely give you a couple hundredths at each shift.

I did the valve body, billet 2nd gear accumulator, stronger 2nd gear servo return spring and cusion block-out washer.

oh ok cool...i'm pretty sure i want to do a lil more than that as far as the tranny.....
