Not just Another Woman
In Doris Lessings “A Woman on a Roof,” three men are overpowered by a woman. A woman sunbathing on a near by rooftop has no time for the three men and this gives her all the power. At a time when men believed they had control over women being ignored was absolutely madding. The woman on the roof used nonverbal communication and body language to become the superior figure in the story. As the men yell and whistle with no attention from the woman on the roof they became angry at her. The woman not being bothered by the men and their actions was unexpected for the time and extremely frustrating to them.
These men think women are here for them and should meet their every demand. This is clear in the beginning when they are joking “about getting an egg from some woman in the flats under them, to poach it for their dinner.” (1) These men obviously think they are above women. Men think they have all the control over woman or at least think they should. This is shown when Harry said: “If she’s married, her old man wouldn’t like that.” Stanley adds “if my wife lay about like that, for everyone to see, I’d soon stop her.” (2) This woman doesn’t appear to be controlled by anyone.
The men think every woman should react to them in a positive way. They expect to woman to act as the woman in the window watering the flowers. Stanley tells her: “We need a drink more than them.” She smiles and said: “Better drop down to the pub quick, it’ll be closing in a minute.” The lady smiles and gives them a wave. “Not like Lady Godiva, “ said Stanley. “She can give us a bit of a chat and a smile.”(4) Another example of the way they think woman should act is Mrs. Pritchett, the blonde wife of an airline pilot, who lent them a blanket and invited them in for a cup of tea.(4) Mrs. Pritchett is friendly and serves the men tea. This is the way the men expect the woman to treat them. Not the way the woman on roof does.
The woman on the roof uses her sexuality through nonverbal communication to show her power. She is sunbathing in red bikini bottoms and this reveals her body. They are annoyed when they see the woman “stark naked” on the roof. Stanley in an annoyed voice said: “She’s stark naked” and Harry agrees “looks like it.” (1) She also demonstrates power by not giving up her right to sunbathe just because it seems to be bothering these men. Her presence is so powerful it is distracting the men from there work. The woman moves to the other side of the building to get away from the men and they still search her out. Her roof belonged to a different system of roofs, separated from theirs at one point by about twenty feet. It meant a scrambling climb from one level to another, edging along parapets, clinging to chimneys, while their big boots slipped and slithered, but at last they stood on a small square projecting roof looking straight down at her, close. (2) The men can’t stand for her to be out sunbathing and not paying them any attention. This is proven by the men continue to look for her on the roof every chance they get. When Harry went to get screws, Stanley tells Tom “come on” (2) they are going to find the woman again.
Another example of power the woman has over them is the fact she is sunbathing, enjoying her self on the roof in the hot sun. She sat smoking, and did not look up when Stanley let out a wolf whistle. Harry said: “Small things amuse small minds,” leading the way back to their part of the roof, but it was scorching. (1) The men complained about having to work out side in the heat. The next day was even hotter and she was there sunbathing again. Several times one or the other of the men suggested they should tell Matthew, the foreman, and ask to leave the roof until the heat wave was over. (2) Her being out there in the sun with such ease was driving the men insane with anger. “What do they think we are, lizards?” said Stanley. “I’ve got blisters all over my hands.”(5)
When Stanley whistles for the first time the woman never even stops to acknowledge them. The second day when he whistles it appears he wakes her and she just looks at them and puts her head back down. This is a woman that doesn’t care what the world around her thinks and doesn’t seem bothered by the men. It drives men crazy when women give them no response. With every whistle she seems to be more irritated. This time when they whistle “she looks up at them, cool and remote, then goes on reading.” Men become angry when woman don’t do what they think is appropriate. Stanley is very angry and said: “I’ve got good mind to report her to the police.” (3) Men commonly throw fits when they feel the loss of control of a woman. The last encounter for Stanley with the woman was Stanley “mad, as he stamped and whistled, while the woman did not move, she did not move a muscle.” (5)
Some women are strong and don’t need a man to control them. Tom remembers his dreams and how friendly the woman on the roof was to him. She wore a black filmy negligee and her kindness to Tom thickened his throat as he remembered it. (4) He builds his courage up when the other to men have already given up completely on the woman. Tom goes to the woman and said: “The sun’s all right for you, isn’t it?” She just tells him “go away.”(6) Tom is going to let her over power him that easily and he stays and tries to get a positive reaction from her. As he tries to engage in conversation with her and she tells him: “if you get a a kick out of seeing women in bikinis, why don’t you take a sixpenny bus ride to the Lido? You’d see dozens of them, without all the mountaineering.”(6) Woman in this time or any time don’t need to be controlled by men. This is a woman that is not going to be controlled.
The woman on the roof did nothing wrong in sunbathing except being an attractive woman. The man were angered completely by the woman’s indifference to them. Like this woman, other woman should not be pushed around by men, to do what they want just because society says this is the way it’s supposed to be. All she did was stand up for herself in an everyday situation. By the woman on the roof not responding to them she leaves them feeling powerless. She in the end is the superior figure. More woman should be strong and stand up for what they want and not be just another woman.

it would be easier to explain why poop is pointed only on one end:confused:
