Not sure if this is accurate but you should be able to use the existing 48RE pilot bushing on the T56.

Auto's don't have a pilot bearing. On a manual transmission the pilot bearing supports the end of the trans input shaft.

You may be completely right. I'm going by someone elses word so please excuse my ignorance.
 
Mine had a pilot bearing behind the torque converter in the crank
 
Maybe most of the crank shafts had them pre installed. I had Arrow install mine before the crank went into the block. Hammering on the end of the crank can be hard on the thrust bearing but sometimes you got to do what you got to do.
If I was swapping auto to stick & found a pilot bearing on a 10 year old truck I would still replace it.
