x-metal shifter noise question ?

anyone who has purchased these shifters know that for avoiding "missing 3rd", you trade off noise... i was wondering if anyone used the stock hurst shifter boot on the x-metal shifter & if it helped more than hindered ?

do the b&m shifters come with a boot ?

or, has anyone come up with another good idea recently to lessen the noise factor ?

Gary gave me a Jedi shifter lever with plastic grommets. It solved 95% of the noise problems on my Gen IV.

So now I can hit third and listen to my music.

Get the Jedi lever you will dampen almost all of the noise.

I used the boot on mine and it didn't help!! Changing fluids from Gear oil to ATF was the bigest reduction in noise for me. I also have a million rubber bands wrapped around it!!

wrapped around what, where the shifter handle meets the shifter ? did that actually help ?

the gear oil swapped help some one mine too, really helped smoothness of shifting more....
 
I have the B&M and used the OE plastice/rubber spacer between the upper and lower sticks and wrapped tennis grip tape aroung them both and no noise at all.
 
I found a way to cancel most of the noise with the X-metal shifter.

1. Go to an auto glass shop and purchase a tube of windshield urethane.

2. Take the handle off of the shifter base.

3. Apply a even 1/8 inch thick coat of the urethane on the side of the handle where it bolts to the shifter, and on the other side where the bolts ride on the shifter handle.

4. Let dry for 24 hours in a warm place. Do not proceed if the urethane is not totally dry, you can tell because it gets real hard when its totally dry.

5. Get some flat washers to go on the head of the bolts that hold the shifter handle to the shifter, you want to get large flat washers. This means you will need to grind the edge of the washers where they meet between the bolts.

6. Trim any excess urethane out of the bolt holes.

7. Place washers on the bolts, then bolt up the handle as normal,making sure that you make them REALLY tight.

This WILL get rid of almost all the shifter noise.

Yes I did use the stock boot.

i'm betting that plastic grommets on my gen4 lever would do the same & cost alot less then that jedi lever........:)

anyone else have an opinion on if the stock boot helps or not ?
 
I put a GenX in my truck about a month ago.

Mine only has a very slight noise, and I really had to listen to hear anything.

I think maybe the good 'ol Prop is right.:)

If you don't have the plastic grommets try them.:dontknow:
 
I installed the x-metal gen IV and could not stand the noise not the "twist" on the shifter.

I switched back to the Hurst, installed a short Hurst lever, and replaced the master/slave cylinder with a viper unit.

Never missed a 3rd again. I think the viper M/S unit is the key.

I put my stock shifter back in just for a little test after installing the Viper master/slave.I still hated it.Just could not power shift to 3rd :(

I really want a Gen 10 ,but I guess I will keep the Gen 4.Very little noise.

do you have the stock boot on your gen4 ?
 
So do I, but I did cut about a half inch of the seam that faces the dash.
