the gen3 engine pulls vaccum from 2 other sources in the intake manifold. even with a boosted engine, you still need to vent the crankcase as the gen3 with a supercharger can suck the cases completley to a total vacuum and collapse the rear main seal. that breather pictured is the just the one that vents to the airbox, so as to keep hot oil-misted air out of the intake charge. yes, a breather tank is nice, but some guys only want to spend 10 bucks to get the job doneAWDisuzu said:I never liked breathers on the valve covers. they look ghetto, they take away your crankcase vacuum source (the intake manifold) and once you lose crankcase vacuum you can expect to start seeing oil drips in the driveway soon after.
If you're running boost, and you still have the breather hooked up, you'll get crankcase pressure which is even worse. so in that case, put the breather on. The ultimate goal is to try and keep a vacuum in there for less wind resistance and to prevent oil from leaking out of the seals.
Oil catch cans are amazing for this purpose. Vacuum pumps work really really well also.
