Thought some of would enjoy this:

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: It never occurred to you to be offended by the phrase, "One nation, under God."

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You've never protested about seeing the 10 Commandments posted in public places.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You still say "Christmas" instead of "Winter Festival."

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You bow your head when someone prays.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You stand and place your hand over your heart when they play the National Anthem.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You treat Viet Nam vets with great respect, and always have.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You've never burned an American flag.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You know what you believe and you aren't afraid to say so, no matter who is listening.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You respect your elders and expect your kids to do the same.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You'd give your last dollar to a friend.

God Bless the U S A !

I love this country as much as anyone...but I think the ones above have nothing to do with being an American.....You don't need God, Commandments, Christ-anything, bowing or restriction of expression to be an American...:dontknow:

Mike, with all love and respect, I believe the point of the piece wasn't to say that anyone must believe any of the things (you) mentioned. but moreover, not to raise hell if someone else does.

The whole point of our American brand of freedom is to allow others to believe or not to believe... And to treat them all with equal deference and respect...

Those religious references were only part of the whole piece, anyway....

I guess maybe I should have added something about not having headers....... Like me.... ;) :D

Peace,

Tim

gottcha...I don't care if you wear flame covered mooomooos or name your dog rooster...Freedom..... ....I am currently not wearing any underwear...:D ....

By this token...

You are a true American if:

You are not offended if the Koran is posted in public places
You are not offended if people say one nation under Bhudda
You are not offended if someone burns a flag (I personally could not stand by and not try to stop this, but the point is freedom)
You are not offended if someone says Happy Holidays

Freedom is freedom.....

I guess at some point someone will (rightly) ask, "when does freedom become so free that it becomes anarchy?" The only plausible and reasonable answer is "when exercising your personal freedom infringes on the lives of others"......

When it comes to wonderful things like the bestowing of freedom, "no good deed will go unpunished" certainly applies.... Ultimately, this is to prophesy that if we insist on providing this same freedom to our enemies, they very well could become strong enough to destroy the very freedom that nurtured them....

It can be a cruel world........ and the forces of evil do (in my opinion) exist.

Fie upon them.........

Most of our forfathers were very religous and had a strong christian lifestyle, not saying they are perfect, but it does say "In God we trust" on our money!

Just my opinion, good post D!

And yep I am a Christian:rock:

they were also slave owners....things change.....

Thats why I said they were not perfect! And your point is valid I will not deny that, I knew this would be the first rebuttal. :D

I am an American!!!!

But I don't know that I could say I would not be offended by hearing: "one nation under Buddha" :dontknow:
But, more because that's just not the way the saying goes, than because I don't like Buddhism or Buddhists. I believe in freedom of religion, and I don't have a problem with that. But, "One Nation under God" is a direct quote and should remain unchanged. JMO

And, Freedom is NOT Free! ;)

Well said, I agree with all that and would add that from my perspective "Under God" is not only a direct quote, it is also ubiquitous, which "under Buddha" would not be.

Last time I checked, Buddhist precepts do not acknowledge a Supreme Being whatsoever. The concept of a Creator or or Supreme Being is quite contrary to their belief... Considering that, Buddha (of course would have) made no claims of divinity himself. So, the analogy or notion of the Pledge of Allegiance being changed to "one nation under Buddha" is a moot one.

Mike was making a point relevant to freedom of worship and his knee jerk reaction shouldn't be taken too literally. After all, he himself admitted that flag burning is a form of free speech that is abominable to him as well...

This raises the issue of our difficulty to allow complete freedom in this country .... We all have differences of opinion about the universal concept of complete freedom. After all, there are laws prohibiting specific acts.

Moreover, I believe that the specific question is whether or not our blanket promise of freedom of religion hasn't painted us into a corner. Since, there is one facet of religion whose essential tenets mandate "death to the infidels"..... Personally, I find that FAR more abominable than simple flag burning.

Benjamin Netanyahu, former Prime Minister of Israel once said, "You have a wonderful free country in the USA...and your freedom is killing you" (paraphrased)......... We allow tremendous freedoms in this great land of ours. But, what point do we say, "it is enough"...and put an end to the evil bastards who blaspheme freedom, while they hide behind the flag and plot.... not only to destroy freedom itself... but all of us along with it....?

Wow...I am absolutely astonished...your words are incredible...and 100% on target.

Freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of expression.

I've spilled a lot of blood, sweat and tears (not to mention the loss of a wife and two children in the process) to assure those freedoms.

I am not offended by someone saying "under God"...I believe in God but am not Christian.

I am not offended by someone saying Merry Christmas, but I am embarrassed that the comment is sometimes thoughtlessly said to someone who might be offended. I've never burned an American Flag and never would, but I would and have, supported the right of others to do so.

I am a Viet Nam vet, and I am also an elder...very elder...but I do not expect people to respect me for my age...I prefer that people express their opinions so that I can continue to grow rather than get stuck in my ways...as Tim has done.

And finally, I am so sick that I have agreed with Mike Brady...this may be a low point in my life, next I will be going back to a stock exhaust manifold. God (yours and mine) please help me.

made me laugh out loud. i figured someone who didnt like headers would dissagree with this thread. :D this ought to been put in the dissagreement thread, lots to debate about that. my personnal opinions are a little stronger than most but it may be my southern upbringing. if i was raised in the land of fruits and nuts(no offense shamrock) id probably feel different. still funny though.
