Bodybuilding

I was really hoping to be around 200 this summer. I'm not that far off if I could keep gaining.

Why 200? 175 and up is ideal, and its not small in my opinion. I know some guys, grown men in the military that weigh 150 soaking wet, and theres one guy who weighed in at 115 pounds last weekend, THATS small. Im on the other side of the fence, I have to eat like a bird, it sucks! I swear it seems like if I drink a fuckin diet coke I gain 20 pounds lol. High metabolism is a gift man be thankful you can eat whatever you want. I havent been under 180 pounds since high school.

I just want to be a little bit bigger.

You guys are exactly right. Machines are great to isolate and focus on a particular area, being why bodybuilders rely on them a lot. Powerlifting on the other hand heavily relies on stabilizers and core strength! I have always mixed it up a bit even when I use to compete. I haven't competed in years and now probably use about as much bodybuilding technique as I do powerlifting.

Me too. Another 50 pounds is all I ask.

50lbs is my goal too. I was 175 when I deployed back in September. From stress because of my wife to not lifting and other factors, I dropped to 155. My Major now lets us go workout before lunch, so 2 of my buddies started dragging me to the gym for pre-lunch lift sesh. Between that and getting back to eating breakfast again and adding 3 protein shakes a day plus my 3 regular meals, I'm up 5lbs in the past 2 weeks. Once I get home I'll get some mass gainer and really ramp it up. Need to put on some weight before Ranger or Sapper school.

Not to burst your bubble bro, but you realize that type of machine reduces the amount that you are actually lifting by approx 50% right??? Go put 400lbs on an actual bar, put it on your back and try to sit to the floor with it...

Here's a couple of mine from the last two leg workouts. I don't have enough depth on the second video for it to count as a completed lift.

This one is correct:

This one would never count for a completed squat at a legit competition:

Machines are an interesting way to build basic strength, focus on areas that may need extra work, avoid injury, etc. But, they should never be used as a method for measuring legit strength.

Chris, no disrespect, brother, but you are going to hurt yourself using that machine that way. The weight needs to stay behind your toes. You are doing most of that lift with your back, and not in a good way!

I asked for your opinion by name on machines in the last page or so but you didnt really say anything till now. I also said that I use free weights and machines in combination. This was just a normal workout, trying to build some strength. Also (and I cant stress this enough) this isnt a "hey look at me, Im strong" thing, this is just me documenting my journey to squat 600 :D

I hear ya, but look at that machine closer, there is NO way to put the weight behind the toes. Maybe I should go back and just post a vid of my freeweight squats :dontknow: I didnt think it would matter much. As for the back thing, its actually one of the reasons I use the machines, I can really workout my lower back on this thing along with my legs, and it never has hurt or even really been that sore. I think everyone works out different, and Im in NO way going for perfect competition form or anything, just getting stronger. ;)

Way to go Caveman! Now that is a squat!!!!
Thanks!

You are doing it wrong. Drive your hips forward and everything should come back into line. I have one of those machines at my gym. I'll make a video and send it to you.

You seriously should. Our intent here is not to criticize each others lifts, but to help each other. Learning to squat correctly is invaluable.

I understand wanting to focus on strengthening the lower and middle back. I use barbell front squats for exactly that. (It is also worth nothing that an accomplished powerlifter from the VTCoA, who hasn't even posted in this thread, recommended this to me.)

Fair enough. But I promise you will gain maximum strength from multi-joint, barbell lifts, done with correct form.

I couldn't agree more with this statement.

If its really a big deal, Ill go back, take a little bit of weight off and do proper squats until my ass touches the ground. I have a goal Im trying to reach here, then I will work on form and perfect it.

What's your goal?

Actually if you look back a few more posts... you'll see that I said you were exactly right and tried to answer your question.
