A few months ago I changed to oil cooler lines and put on a new Mobil 1 filter and new oil. About a month later I noticed the filter was leaking. The only place open was AutoZone and I bought a K & N and put it on. Figuring that when the oil was due, changing to a Mopar filter.

I got back this afternoon from a 70 mile round trip and noticed oil under the truck in the garage.

Now the K & N sprung a leak.

Checker was open and was able to get a Mopar filter. Changed the oil while I was at it.

By the dash gauge the oil pressure seems normal for this engine. 50 lbs at idle and 75 to a little over when driving.

I'd like to blow this off as 2 crappy filters...but wondering.

Two crappy filters! Seen it a dozen times. Mopar 090 or Viper Filter only!;)

I remember hearing about sticking oil pressure relief valves but don't remember what year trucks that involved.

Sounds like you are running 20W50 oil. I have similar numbers running same.

I would check carefully that you don't have an old rubber O-Ring or piece of one stuck on the sealing surface for the filter.

I can recommend AMSOIL EAO42 [specific to GenIII Viper] synthetic oil filters without hesitation. They have far superior filtering capabilities and in nearly 10 years I've never had an issue with any of the cars I've put them on including my truck.

The EAO filters are fully synthetic and have stellar numbers.

Nope. 10w30 Mobil 1 like the oil cap says to use. And, no old rubber on the filter surface

I recently had a K&N oil filter fail also. I am using the right oil, and it had already been on for about 500 miles before it failed, so it wasn't an installation problem. Oil level was full and the garage floor was clean before I took it out for some combined surface street and freeway driving. After about 50 miles I stopped at a light and smelled oil burning. I looked under the hood and saw no visible leaks, but took it straight to the (nearby) shop where I have all my work done. The whole underside of the truck was covered in oil, and it was 2 quarts low. In 50 miles! After a new filter and new oil, I cleaned the K&N filter, took it home, and poured oil in it. In about 5 minutes it was leaking around the the flange of the nut on the bottom (under 0 pressure!). If I had been on a longer drive where I wouldn't have stopped and smelled it, it could have been a very expensive disaster.

I sent an email to K&N detailing the whole thing along with pictures of the leaking filter, and did not receive any response. Do not ever use these things, they are just plain dangerous!

Had customers tell me that nut is the reason they buy a K&N filter
I guess they won't spend $10 on a proper tool that will last a lifetime

Blew out a K&N and Fram. Just saying.
