I am confused (not an unusual circumstance), but hardwiring just means you don't have to have it plugged into the cigarette lighter right? My mute button is on the actual radar detector, is the escort on the cigarette lighter part?
Dear Confused, Yeah the mute button is on the detector itself and the Escort also offers a remote mute on the power cord where it plugs into the cigarette lighter. The hard wire kit I linked to allows you to hide all the wires and still keep the remote mute feature. You can put the mute switch just about anywhere you want to.

Hmmm... Interesting. Is the radar detector that far from the driver or do people just not like reaching up there and hitting the mute button? I have a V1 that came with a remote mute and arrows but never put it in because I just hit the mute on the detector. Thanks for explaining.

I've got my V1 mounted just under the rear view mirror but it stays dark since I have the remote display plugged into it. I have the remote display mounted in the parcel tray so that it cannot be seen by other vehicles. I put the remote mute button on the shift lever so that I can mute the detector without taking my eye's off the road or hunting for the mute button on the remote display. Don't know if all that's really necessary but I have it set up that way because I can. It's just a matter of convenience.
