After this, it's going to be tough riding in the DC/MD/VA area for a while. I'm sure the cops will be messing with riders to the 100th degree - at least until they find the rider or he turns himself in

So many things could have been done differently to avoid this. I actually saw the aftermath of the accident and it looked like a scene from "CHiPs". There were cars thrown all over the place like toys!!

2 Killed, 15 Injured in Chain of Beltway Crashes
Md. Collisions Occur During Police Chase of Motorcycle

A police attempt to stop a speeding motorcycle touched off a gruesome series of collisions on both sides of the Capital Beltway in Prince George's County last night, killing two people and injuring 15 others, including two officers.

The seven-vehicle pileup, one of the Beltway's most violent in recent memory, closed down all lanes of the inner loop in the Forestville area for nearly five hours and snarled traffic on both sides of the highway late into the night.

"I've been in law enforcement a long time and have been on a number of tough scenes. And this is a tough scene," said Prince George's Police Chief Melvin C. High. "Your thoughts go to [the injured and dead], and their families and friends."

The accident was set in motion about 7 p.m. when a Prince George's police cruiser chasing the motorcycle on the outer loop near the Ritchie Marlboro Road exit slammed into a vehicle after the motorcycle cut in front of the car, police said.

The force of the impact caused the car to go airborne over the median's guardrail and into oncoming traffic on the inner loop. That caused a chain-reaction crash involving five southbound cars.

The motorcycle sped off, and its driver remained at large, police said.

Details about the two dead were unavailable last night. The 15 injured were taken to hospitals; one of them was said to be in critical condition.

The collisions left vehicles strewn across the inner loop. One vehicle was overturned and bent like an accordion. Police said it was a sport-utility vehicle, but it was no longer identifiable. Rescuers ripped the tops off of at least two cars to free their occupants, said Cpl. Stephen Pacheco.

The officers involved in the crash were traveling in two vehicles, officials said. One was pursuing the motorcycle; the other was off-duty and heading home on the inner loop.

High said both officers were seriously injured, but the off-duty officer was hurt more severely. He was being treated last night at Prince George's Hospital Center. Neither officer's injuries were believed to be life-threatening, Pacheco said.

Traffic on the Beltway was at a standstill for hours. The inner loop was closed near Exit 13, the ramp for Ritchie Marlboro Road.

High said police captured the pursuit and ensuing crash with a video camera in a cruiser. Authorities will use the footage to try to identify the motorcycle and its driver, he said. Police also interviewed several witnesses.

Pacheco said some lanes of the Beltway near the crash scene will be closed after the morning rush today as the investigation continues. The closures were expected to start about 10 a.m.

The officer who pursed the motorcycle has been put on administrative leave, authorities said. Neither officer was immediately identified.

The accident "illustrates the problem we have with speed and what can happen in an instant," High said.

I'm sorry if this comes out wrong but...

Why the hell would they chase him????????????? FFS it's 100 times more dangerous to the public and officers to chase someone on a motorcycle, if he's not going to pull over within a short distance it's better to let him go.

My heart goes out to the innocent and families involved in this whole mess of a situation.

yep, i agree. dont get me wrong this guys is responible for running from the cops but i would think they should use better judgement next time. Its like beating down and cuffin a kid for takin some candy.

not sure of the right answer...but if word gets out that you speed away long enough on a bike and the cops back off, you will have a whole other problem on your hands. What would be a short distance? When should cops back off, this person is responsible for the deaths of others, I hope he got the plate #s.

Remember, this is PG County and the (DC) Beltway put together. Too much traffic and completely reckless drivers thrown together. Guys (trying not to pick on race/color/age) do speed runs from exit to exit.

You can blame the rider all you want. But if there's anything in the DC area are cops.

When you are going up against a vehicle that can reach 170+, use the darn radio. If you don't have enough back up, then he got away.

I have been riding bikes my whole life, there is not any reason an officer should attempt to chase a bike its pointless, if anything he should have used his radio and let somebody know the last mile marker he was at & direction he was going, i would say that the officer was probally a rookie with little or no experiance at his job or for that matter in life. I know most western states have adpoted a no pursute law this must not be the case back east.

I think we all need to hold off on condeming the cops. Perhaps better judgement was needed but we weren't the ones that had to react. If it was me I would have let him go but I'm not going to verbally castrate a Peace Officer for doing his job.

I know for a fact here in New Mexico & Southern Colorado the no pursuit law was passed after many people were not stopping for many reason's. And since that time there has been no hell to pay as far as cop's making anybody who drives or who they think might run suffer in some way. But lets face it most officers that are on traffic detail are rookies or cops that are on there way out for whatever reason and in the rookies case most dont have the experiance to drive fast / try to run down a sport bike.

my thoughts and prayers go out to all involved! (including the law enforcement) for my .02 they should have used better judgement! at what point does law enforcement have the obligation, or athority to put myself or anyone, in harms way? on the other hand i do know none if this would have happened if the idiot would have just "pulled over" or would not have been breaking the law to begin with!!! i feel for all the people involved!! just my .02

Their own policy says that an officer's primary concern should be the preservation of life and that capturing or identifying a suspect is secondary to safety.

The officer should not have pursed the motorcycle up to 120 miles per hour in rush hour traffic...he didn't even call in the pursuit. Unfortunately the policeman is at fault here. He...not the motorcycle slammed into the back of the other vehicle. What speed was the officer going to cause the SUV to jump the barrier...very, very sad. All to chase a motorcycle that was weaving in and out of traffic.

The officer is 100% at fault for the accident. Yes the guy on the bike was evading capture but the officer was responsible for innocent lives involved and he blew it. In any accident, the driver who lost control of his or her vehicle is ticketed and that person is 100% responsible. You must remain in control of your vehicle at ALL times. Police officers are not outside the law, though most act as though they are when behind the wheel. I would not be a police officer for any amount of money and I appreciate all they do. That being said, they tend to lose their common sense when pursuing a fleeing vehicle. This stuff happens way too often. If the fleeing vehicle is not a violent felon, they should be let go. The license plate identifies the driver or gives enough information to locate the driver. Let the detectives bring the driver to justice and many lives would be saved. Cops let their emotions get the best of them in these situations and they should be trained to deal with fleeing vehicles differently. Something really needs to change.

The cop losing control of his vehicle is wrong, however as soon as people figure out that the cops can't chase you just about everyone will run. You must punish people that run from the cops so strongly that most people would rather stop than face the punishment.

Bill.

That is not true...once that got your tag number...they know who you are. So, unless you are a theif who is constantly stealing tags and running from the cops they will meet your at your house.

Heck...they may have the tag number of the motorcycle that ran...they just haven't said yet.

I grew up in the Dc area.Had my share of running from cops on my dirtbike.
For some reason they didnt like me riding on the roads.Go figure.!!You know what they say. Can't outrun that freaking radio!! Or worse case that freaking helicopter!! I did do that once, hid in the woods! Not to make light of a very serious situation, that cop really should have backed off and caught this guy another day.He will get caught!they will find someone that saw him or napped the plate. So who is responce.for the deaths. As mentioned should the cop or will they throw this on the idiot who was probly just dicking around and the whole thing got way out of control?Keep us posted if you hear anything.
