Brakes

I went the $35.00 brake pad route on my Hot Rod Lincoln once and they worked just fine until I had to do a panic stop at 70+ mph. The friction material on one of the pads sheered off causing the car to yank hard to the right, and I nearly crashed.

The shop asked me how good did I think a pad that retailed for less than $10 apiece was going to be.

Since then I only purchase name brand high performance pads.

I wouldnt use those... Just my .02. Did you resurface the rotors? Dealer wants that much becuase when you resurface these Rotors, you should only use an On The Car Brake Lathe.

Now I don't mind paying a little more for the shop to do things that I am frankly just too lazy to do. but a 400% markup and lying to me about the condition of my brakes is just a bit much to take.

Also being as autozone probably sells 1000 times as many brakes as some of the "name brand" people and have yet to get sued to death from having their brakes explode, I have a hard time paying a 300% markup for "name brand" performance brakes.

Time will tell if I regret this decision but as of right now, I am feeling pretty good about avoiding getting ripped off.

Now that is what I am talking about, just enough of a markup to justify the performance parts but not enough to insult my intelligence.

I wish I had that link before, but I have it bookmarked now.

And here I could have gotten brand new slotted rotors for half the price the dealer wanted to turn mine. Bastages, hope they rot in hell with the rest of the Dodge dealers around here. I was good to them too, I had all my services done there for all my vehicles, looks like it's time to look at a Japanese company for my next car (sigh, I really did try to hold out)

Next - Toyota Something. :argh: :argh: :dontknow: :argh: :argh:

Post-log:

Here is a recap of the whole story as there is a new development:

I originally took the truck in to check out a brake squeal. They checked it and said my rear brakes were fine but the front brakes needed to be replaced as they were down to 10%. When they tried to charge me over $500 to replace the front brakes and turn the rotors, I went looking for a better solution. I found a much cheaper solution and when I was changing out the brakes I found that they still had 50% of the meat left on them.

Needless to say this made me a bit irritated that not only were they charging me a 400% markup to do the job, the job didn't need to be done in the first place.

Now comes the new part....

The brake squeal is still there so I crawl under the truck to find that the rear brakes are metal to metal!
:argh:

So here I am with new front brakes I didn't need and no money left right now for the rear brakes that I do need. In fact I probably need new rotors as there is some grooving in one of them.

I would expect something like this from a shade tree mechanic but from the authorized dealer? When they could have made a legitimate profit out of fixing the real problem?

This is the same dealer I bought the truck from and have brought it back to for all of its scheduled services and oil changes.

woah...

queue the jaws music, my 10 is at the dealership right now.....:(

Some dealers are just plain rip offs but for the most part so far I've had a good experience with the SoCal dealerships. Robert (MoparConnection) is a great example of how good Dealerships are like.

I think they are getting hungry, two of the major Chrysler dealers here have folded.

This service department used to be good, I really think they are trying to make up for lost sales by generating money in the service department.

I can't tell you how nice it would be to have a trustworthy place close to home.

if you email dave z he will get back to you shortly...... very knowledgeable about brakes & friendly...... you MUST follow his brake bedding procedure - solves a number of issues (noise, shutter,)..... :)
for me however, i found his brakes to be great in the dry - not so good in the wet conditions..... as far as drilled/slotted rotors - you don't get much of a return on the investment. :(
