Cold weather start up, whining noise?

It's colder than I care for it to be in Florida the past week. When starting my truck I get a whining sound while it's cold. I just wanted to make sure it's common in cold weather, and not something else. Not usually cold in florida so I want to make sure it's ok, like oil trying to move around or
something since I use 40..
 
I noticed mine was making a bit more noise than normal. Mine was more lifter noise. Anytime it sits for a bit, I usually start it up and let it idle until it warms up.
 
Mine does it on every cold startup. There was a thread on here long ago about it. It is supposed to be the oil filter vibrating when cold if you run K&N which mine has. I'll be changing oil soon and putting the Mopar filter back on. The problem is supposed to go away with the Mopar filter.

I use a Mopar filter and never had a whine.....if you change over to the Mopar make sure it is the ugraded filter that is white with the word "VIPER" on it...dealers are bad to install or sell the old filter.

My dealer tried telling me that filter didnt exist. I told them to get me the viper tech. He know exactly what I was talking about and put one on my truck.
 
My first 10 had a PS whine on cold start up, I could move the wheel slightly and make the noise change. I have my new 10 in the garage, it's 1 above with a -15 wind chill. I'm afraid to start it.
 
could be a number of different things bo,

one alternator, make sure the battery has a good charge, before you crank it up, the cold will draw down the battery and the alt will work double time to charge it up

two the ps, sometimes the fluid gets "gelled" almost, and will whine like a little girl till it warms

other is the oil filter, only way to tell is jsut to change it and see if it cures the prob
 
You should hear the noises coming from a vehicle on a cold start when it is -40 or colder...especially if you don't plug them in.
Well, if it starts at all that is...

I have the whine with several different filters, Including the Viper filter. The only one that does not whine is the OEM black filter. I am running the viper filter currently. I tried the K&N, Mobil-1 filter, Fram.

Started mine up last weekend at -17. It whined a bit then quit. Up here, at that temp everyone's cars/trucks make weird noises when you first start them, even the new ones. You should hear my old 97 Ford F150....makes the most god awful noises if I forget to plug it in:D :D

Mine does this when its cold too. The first two turns or so its almost like there is no power steering. The PS fluid is full and I do not see any leaks. Is this normal and just being caused by the fluid thickening up in the cold weather? It also whines sometimes as well. Just curious.
 
Yea it doesn't affect the driving. It just makes a little whine noise on start
up and is a little louder when I turn the wheel. Probably just PS also
it only makes the whine sound when gas is applied just idling has no
noise!
 
ps is basically hyrdraulic fluid, so like on a backhoe or dozer when its cold , the hydraulics dont want to work, you can change it over to a sythetic, and it seems to help a bit

Dude, you and your phuckin noises. Turn the dam radio up, I promise you wont hear a thing. :D You get the driveshaft fixed yet?
 
it's not cold here long enough to justify changing out to synthetic...I'll deal with the noise for now.

Lol the truck makes more noise then all 6 of my past vehicles combined. Nope gotta make time to get it in the shop.
 
I am going to run the cheap Mopar Wally World special. It is just a filter and will be fine as long as it doesn't reduce pressure or blow apart. The K&N filter is probably made by a cheapo company and sold through K&N. I'm sure the Mopar filter is too but the noise will be gone or hopefully so. Mine makes the noise even in warm weather. It sounds like a supercharger.
