Custom Toothed Pulleys?

Hi guys,

While I'm doing the engine I thought I would do some searching and have found a couple of places that can custom make pulleys to the same size/spec as OEM but in a toothed style for a belt drive style system (like Gilmer or Millerspeed). I've heard these belts offer more "push" at high rpm (not sure how true that is) but also give the engine a wicked (IMO) super charged sound, the old school BELT sound. I personally like that sound and think it'd be cool. My question, is there any issues going from a "ribbed"? OEM pulley belt to a tooth style? Over spinning or anything like that? I have NO IDEA hence the reason I'm asking. All it is is ear candy (to me) no performance gains I can think of, just a unique sound. Not set on anything yet, will probably stick with the standard pulleys, but as always, I'm doing my research first.

Merry Christmas Carl.

Many years ago when Boomer was still on the site, I brought this up as a solution to the high boost/rpm belt slippage issues that the paxton was having. Boomers response was that the gogged belts cause more vibration and the crank snout on the viper engine was not really up to it.

The only person I know of that has a gogged belt is Eric, Ram From Hell, but he really has not had the truck running that long to provide a long term report.

Being an engineer myself I can agree with Boomer as to the increased vibration of this style of belt. It's also heavier. What I do not know about is the strength of the crank snout.

Hope that helps.

That helps heaps thanks mate. ;) I had a funny feeling it wasn't as simple as just "swapping cogs". I think I will flag this idea and move on. Reliability is first and foremost with me so even the slightest "ah, it should be OK" is a no-go in my books lol. Thanks mate, Merry Christmas to you too. :)

One other issue was possible problems with the oil pump from the vibration. Unless you needed it for a supercharger I wouldn't go through the hassle just to take a risk.

I have an F2 Procharger on the red truck but it has not run long enough to give any long term reports.

I am also running a separate belt driven Daley external oil pump.

Looks like TOTM material to me, when you gonna have it running??

Waiting on the remainder of wiring for the Pectel programmer, then Justin will be able to reinstall the motor and then it is going to Portland Or to get tuned.

I am thinking maybe 1-2 months. But that may not happen if history is any indicator of the time it will take. :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow:

Thanks Jack, love the engine mate, looks tough!

But as mentioned, I'm a NA bolt on build and am not going to even consider it due to the "issues" that can and will arise on a stock platform. :)

Glad I went back and read this. I was wondering what that other pulley was for.

Looks pretty nice Jack.

Thanks John,

Justin & Marty of JMB Justin get the credit for making it look good. They have a lot of talent.

Who is in Portland, OR? I thought Justin was one of the best at tuning these Monsters.

I dont do any tuning other than a little for the srt4's and my own personal vehicles. Too much liability for the minimal gains IMO, I stick to blue collar metal work :)

Thanks for the clarification Justin.

Thanks for the second/third confirmation of disapproval Joe. :)

No problem hehe. You're thinking outside the box and I like your effort, but I don't want to see you spend money needlessly either. :D
