Differntial Fluid Questioin

Fluid for a QC. Manual states SAE 90. I have seen people use 75-90 which is recommended for other diffs not the DANA 60. Does this matter? Also the limited slip additive. Is it ok to use what you find in the auto parts store or should this be gotten from Mopar? Also see DIY posts indicating 4 oz of LSA manual states 5 oz. for DANA 60. Which is right for our rear end. We have a DANA 60 correct?

Thanks for any help on some clarification here.


Info From Manual
248RBI - Mopar Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 90 (DANA 60)
Manual states 5 oz of limited slip additive for DANA 60, 4 oz with Trak Loc. (Other Diffs beside DANA 60)
 
Sorry for spelling differential wrong. I really can't spell for crap.
 
Royal purple works great and for those that don't know the additive is fish oil it is an anti chatter, stinks very bad so don't spill on your shoes you will be throwin them out.
 
i have always been told to use limited slip additive from GM. I used it in my 02 ram 1500 when it kept locking up and it worked great

I picked up 3 qts of the Mobil 1 synthetic 75W-90 and 7 fl. oz. tube of Trans-x Limited Slip Additive. I was more concerned about the weight of the oil but they did not have straight 90 weight gear oil, so this should be fine.

Just wanted to see what others have used.
 
Removing Diff Cover?

One more thing. Is it necessary to remove the differential cover or is just draining the fluid from the drain plugs sufficient? I bought some RTV sealant just in case. Just does not seem a need to take the cover off and have to reseal everything just to change out the fluid. Thoughts??

I allways make sure the fluids are hot at the time of draining.

75w90 will be fine Snake, but you shouldnt need the addititive, most off the shelf rear axle oils allready have the additive added to it.

jsut get the axle warm like supercar says, and let her drain:rock:

Thanks for that. I found this on Mobil1's site just for anyone else who was interested. Just to clarify further what Stinker already mentioned about the additive. That's why it is always good to ask questions, always something to learn from you guys. Thanks again.

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid.

If all the gear lubes do not stink like the additive, chances are they do not have the right additive in the gear lube.
I have had limited slips for over 30 years and have Not found any off the shelf lubes with the necessary additive in them.

Use the friction additive, Moss Dodge,as well as others recommend 2 bottles of additive ( they service all the 10's, and fleet vehicle's in this manner as there is less wear over time on the clutches in the limited slip diff's):D
 
always add 2 bottles of the mopar limited slip additive...i use mopar synthetic 75-140

Thank you Snake , after talking with Mobil, Royal Purple, and redline over the past few months on products, they all said the same thing, the modifier is allready in the rear axle fluids so adding a friction modifier is a waste of $ and time;)
 
I have the additive already, 7oz bottle. Goin to add it anyway, can't hurt.

If anything it will jsut give your axle and compenants more protection:rock:

3.5qts? One adendum, might want to go ahead and take the cover off if this is the first change.
On the first change there is most likely a bunch of debri that will be settled at the very bottom of the housing.

thats why i put them on the site as a pack of 4:) also be sure to read the entire description:D

not trying to sell ya anything, mobil is alot cheaper, but a man has to make a living:p
 
when i get my 4.88's and cryo'd spiders installed i was looking at some redline fluid. anybody using redline? trans or diff.
