Do we have to remove heads so lifters don't fall? -for cam install

Do we have to remove the heads so the lifters won't fall (during a cam install)?
The manual is hinting that we do as far as I can tell. The last time I did it was with the hemi and I didn't. :dontknow:
 
this discussion has been up before...My viper techs say yes but someone here has apperently done it before without removing heads
 
If it was me, I would be replacing the lifters at the same time so it wouldn't be an issue. I know, we have roller lifters, but still I don't like installing used lifters on a new cam.

But then I'm old school.:eek:

Me too I guess. I just assumed that when a cam goes in, new lifters were just the norm...a worn lifter on a new lobe creates a flat spot that will change lift and duration in short order...seems like there was a point in my life that lifters, push rods and rocker arms all went out when the cam changed...but I that was in a fully sponsored situation...

I am old school also and would never think of putting used flat tappet or hydraulic lifters on a different (new) camshaft.

With a flat tappet (solid lifter) or hydraulic lifter, I would always replace the lifters along with the camshaft.

I have replaced several camshafts with hydraulic roller lifters and had no troulbe with anything. This is providing that the rollers, axles in the lifters, bearings, ect; are in good condition. The roller if it is working properly prevents the wear pattern from burnishing into the camshaft as with a flat tappet.
 
Old habits are hard to break. I have always changed the lifters too, but I've never read one time that a requirement with a roller cam, although it goes against my grain. But I always remind myself, we thought the world had ended back when we got unleaded gas and then them damn computers that controlled the timing and such. We thought the world of hot rodding was gone forever...now look at us...I guess things change and we adapt...LOL!!!

All that said, when I do my cam, it will have new lifters, just in case...;) :D
 
you doing your own cam install bone? do us a write up in the do it yourself

Yeah, I know you can do it Jack, but it's just one of those things that makes me cringe at that thought of.

I guess the one thing that really concerns me is that without being able to inspect them, you don't even know if they are good or bad. That unknown would eat at me no end.

We change cams in the Fuel motor all the time and use the old roller lifters and we have never had a cam go flat. Or any problems associatee with the process. That is with .850" lift, and 350 pounds of pressure on the seat. The roller setup makes it an entirley different deal. There is no wear pattern established on the camshaft itself.

If the Stock roller lifter is in good shape ie; Rollers, Axles, bleed down/piddle valves, you are good to go.

However the factory lifter is quite heavy, Jessel makes a hydraulic roller lifter that is much lighter.

This is probably the only reason I would change out the lifter on a roller cam swap.

Always replace the lifters on a non roller cam swap.

Any one that feels more comfortable with new lifters on a cam swap should replace them, if they have the funds to do so.
 
Kind of getting away from my original question but here is an answer from the SRT Engineering Team on the lifter's reuse:

The cam is a substantial part of the package; it's definitely worth the trip. Our recommendation for the installation is to follow the service manual procedure. And yes, the cam can be used with the original lifters.

being old school myself i would have to say yes,just to be on the safe side.
 
YOu are supposed to be able to do the cam install without removing the heads and lifters. BUT if you try it you might want to have a long magnet retriever handy just in case. Otherwise you might end up having to pull the heads.;)
 
Take the push rods out. Pull the lifters up and throw a tie wrap around them to hold them up. And in place.

But you have to remove the heads to access the lifters :dontknow:
 
Dave - What are the cam specs of the cam you chose? Did you select it for N/A or nitrous?
