Drop in Oil pressure and schreeching sounds

hell it would be way less than that with her runnin:mad:

one of my bosses boys had a real nice very strong built GTO.

never checked the oil, as hard as he drove it. i got to see what the inside of one of those LS3,4, whatever looked like, lol

Truck still makes the same power on the butt dyno. Oil pressure is right at 50 where it always is. No blue smoke, no hesitation, no issues. Oil temp runs consistantly at 170.

I guess its really my fault though. I have never owned a vehicle that could possibly consume that much oil. I've driven it about 20,000 miles over the last 30 months. I've changed the oil every 5-6000 or so miles since I bought it with Mobil 1 Tri Synthetic. It is coming time for an oil change though soon.

OK so what are your suggestions then? You guys know these motors far better than I do. Do you really think it's likely that i'll spin a bearing or something of that nature any time soon? I could pull the valve covers off and see if there is any sludge build-up or something like that.

Guys understand something too, I have never had a check engine light- not a single issue with this truck (as far as engine and transmission are concerned). I thought the gauge coming on must have been a malfunction. Especially since it occured for a fraction of a second each time. Ive owned a number of Dodge and Chrysler products and never had "engine" trouble.

There really is no way to tell for certain, the fact that it got low enough for the oil pressure to fluctuate is worrisome. How low did it drop?

To 10 for the check gauge light to come on. Or less then that. Get a sample of your oil and send it to a lab

When the light came on it was at maybe 10psi. Enough for the gauge to come on.

Anyone know the threshold for the oil pressure sending unit? Like when it signals the gauge to display a warning?

NVM

that would be the best, cheapest & quickest way to see whats goin on inside her.

i would suggest takin one before the oil change & put a few miles on her then pull another one after the oil change

Ok. So where exactly do I send the oil????? What does it cost to have it analyzed?

ya got a Cat house by ya????

as in earth movin Cat, lol.

go to their parts dept. & ask for an oil sample bottle. comes with labels & postage. unless they do their samples in house.

not sure on the price, get mine through the company.

when ya take it, be sure the drain plug area is clean

light. I heard the chime and then "Check Gauges" the damn oil pressure gauge was in the red again. I blipped the throttle and it went to normal pressure. The oil temp gauge did not fluctuate it's readings.
So when your oil pressure dropped your first thought was to spin the engine faster?
This!! Oil pressure drop always = SHUT IT DOWN NOW

No? I added 7 or so quarts and the oil is still clean.
Change your oil. Now. No seriously, right now. AND FREAKING CHECK THE DIPSTICK BEFORE DRIVING IT!

OK so what are your suggestions then?
I highly recommend checking your oil. In your case, you should do it every time you stop for fuel. Seriously.

Ok. I'll change the oil, find a John Deer dealer and get it analyzed- and i'll check the oil more regularly....

I really hope an engine failure is not in your near future, the oil report will give you a better understanding of what's going on inside the engine and hopefully it's not bad. Good luck!

the screeching sound was either your oil pump starving or.....a bearing grinding because it did not have enough oil

Diesel engine mechanic should be able to sample the oil for you if there's one more convenient around than a Caterpillar or JD place.

I only blipped the throttle. Maybe 2-300 rpm more than idle. :dontknow:
I'm messing with you, bro. :) We are all here to learn from each other. It's just a lot more fun if we get to harass each other along the way :D

The thing is... I never make such mistakes that could possibly have such disastrous results. Frankly the fact that the oil was so low is embarassing. I cannot believe that was the cause of the low oil pressure. The thought never even occured to me.

I think I know where the oil went though. A little over a year ago I sold Tony my tonneau cover. Part of the deal was stainless steel oil lines.

I knew they had a small leak, but nothing like losing so many quarts of oil.

I have the lines and am going to install them on my next day off for sure. That should solve my problem hopfully.

Wierdly though, there isn't any oil build up under the truck- I have never seen a drop of oil on the garage floor either...l :dontknow:

If you do a search you will see several others have said the same thing.

Question...

Worst case scenario. I decide to rebuild the motor. I'd go with Roe Forged internals. The $2k one. Other than bearings, seals, pistons and rods- what else do you think i'd have to replace? Might as well do a cam while i'm at it- do you think it's possible to have any head damage at this point?
