Locally we have had some smoke caused by forest fires in our region shroud the town for a couple days now. Awoke to my truck slightly covered in ash. I drove to work just like any other day. After work I drove to a few businesses and noticed my water temp gauge climb to 240, which has never happened since I purchased the truck and I do drive it hard on occasion but never reached any higher than 210, same as my oil temp. I managed to pull over and pop the hood, everything was intact and topped still but a new noise has entered in the picture.

Is this a normal sounding viper engine? I have been waiting for a good day to proceed with changing the plugs, I hope all of you are doing well as I am not.

P.S mind the gf there in the beast's seat... women..... "this is scary..."

may sound silly but did you check you air filter? if you had ash that shit clogs filters real fast. Your truck sounds asmatic:p just a thought.

sounds like there is something extra there for sure. sounds smooth.


oil pressure & oil level ok????
 
I did check the air filter, and it's clear and clean. Oil pressure at idle is 25, high idle, 75 and when driving moderately near 50-60ish. Runs at 90psi at cold start for a few mins. I just noticed that I had to add more oil in today. I always check it at each fuel up. On the dipstick, it was 3/4 stars.

Smooth? I haven't really heard what a rough sounding vip.eng is like.

holy crips that sounded nasty... dont fire that thing up untill some here gives sound advice :eek:

245* is not normal something happened... it could be a dozen different things. The abnormal "noise" sounds like like valve train is off maybe a cam bearing or even main i would change the oil and check for metal with a magnet then open the valve covers and get a dozen red rags.

I understand that the viper engines make "ticking" sound... but the sound coming from the driv.pass. side wheel wells... from the video.. that rickety sound, is that normal?

I just read the horror story "HaulinAsp" had and it got me worried. I just wanted to be sure that the sounds coming from my engine wasn't telling a horror story of its own.
 
Regarding bigredv10 last post.

The oil has been changed 1200 miles ago with M1 0w40 synthetic, could this just make it louder as opposed to hearing what it sounds like at a heavier weighted oil?

We have the smoke pretty bad from BC today as well. Where were you holding the mic near the end of your clip? That does not sound normal at all. Are you in Vancouver?
 
Hey oldcolt that would be the passenger side. I have had a p0307 come up before (panicked) but assumed I'd try to see if it'll come back first in case it was not a potential, so I cleared it. It's been 4 months now and haven't had any CEL since then. And no I'm 8 hours west from there.

From what I've gathered is that..

0w40 syn makes for more noise. ATF syn in tranny makes for more noise. Headers makes for more noise and rattle... with those combined... make it the "normal" for the combination?

depends.. you said water temp rose to 245 right? At that temp its only a matter of time before things goes wrong, even a few seconds can be detrimental. Im not a viper expert by any means but I do know general mechanics. Either way thats just my opinion sounds like somthing failed and the end result is a noisy valvetrain :dontknow:

Sounds "tinny" like an exhaust gasket blown. If not that I would check the rockers arms on that side, could possibly be a bent pushrod. Spray your radiator good with water to be sure no ash is in there. Have no explanation for the high engine temps. Did your power steering act up at the same time??
 
I have actually had some of that noise since the purchase of the ten, It was always loud and as the video shows.. noisy. But it's been more profound since the 245 moment. The dealerships here aren't trustworthy, they make soak me for something that is not it at all - but at this point no way to tell exactly either, and autoshops here are sketchy, they don't treat customer vehicles like their own so it comes back a little beaten each time (ask me how I know.) I'm left either doing the work myself in open outside with a couple days if weather proceeds itself as good.
 
Regarding FATJACK post: No, I still had power steering. I did notice massive amounts of fuel instantly gone. Fuel mark dropped an 1/8th.

As TheMoparConnection says, there is a lot of things it could be. I thought maybe either my fan wasn't running as I had nothing running inside, might be belt, lean for a moment.. bad fuel.. bad sensor, stuck thermostat.. loss of coolant...

But fan works fine, belt is new, runs rich, fuel 94oct, sensors work, thermostat works, coolant still at max.

I don't own a 10 yet but have had performance cars before. I did a lot of work on my cars and to me that sounds exactly like an exhaust leak. When I had my Mustang and I bolted on the off road H-pipe for the first time I accidentally cross threaded one of the passenger side bolts, Because I was running late for work I didn't have the time to replace it and I ran with an 1/8 inch gap that the gasket would not seal for about a week and that is exactly what it sounded like.

are those Belanger headers???

if it has the gaskets that came with them, probably a blown exhaust gasket.

if so go back with the OEM gaskets. mine blew, even after checkin the bolts a few times.

have ya checked for codes? to see if it saw a hot condition???? might have been one of them "glitches"???
 
this may sound dumb but i am assuming youve checked the water level. like they said either blow out or wash out the radiator. crank it up and open the radiator cap. make sure the water is circulating. tstat could be stuck or water pump may be toast. as far as the sound its hard to diagnose over the net...lol
 
Sounds like a loose rocker or two? Check your plugs on both banks to make sure one hasn't worked loose. They will make a funny sound like that, power down, and could show a lean reading from o2s and they fatten the mix? Exhaust leaks before and around the O2 will mess up fueling substanially as well.Get a stethoscope and listen for the noise and isolate it.:rock:

P.S. Have you had anything done to it lately. Mods, tune up, etc.? Are you sure it was never above the "245"?
