I just find these kind of resources invaluable...one of the great gifts of the internet. All of that material that was forced on us, memorized for the tests, then forgotten, in one compact and concise place...

I hated english in school. I was a farm boy, planned on farming the rest of my life, couldn't for the life of me understand where I would ever be diagramming a sentence. Now 30 years later in the electronics engineering industry I am amazed at what people who hold master's and phd's call grammar, sentence structure, and spelling. Education doesn't seem to matter much, it appears to be common sense.

This resource was good Roy. I wonder what ever happened to learning just for knowledge or fun:dontknow: One thing that I believe is that the current stance that children need to know something by a certain age is wrong. What did we all learn from memorization??? Nothing, we were just parrots. When we were open to learning something that is what we learned and remembered.

I would never try to debate you on education Roy. But after many years of listening to my better half about home schooling I am starting to believe you can not teach a child anything until they are ready to learn it.

Heck some people even overlook those things and choose not to be too critical.
 
Absolutely true. And more should have those traits. Alas, the pitiful reality is not the ideal. I can only hope to arm some with the tools to work around those that judge others on the basis of a few characteristics rather than the totality of the individual.

Agreed, SOME do not. However, first impressions tend to mean a lot. When you first impression of someone is that they have bad grammar, it can affect your opinion, even if you don't mean for it to.

Also, I would say that many don't differentiate their grammar, spelling and punctuation between everyday life and the internets.

I have seen some writings at work, by college educated people, that you would think was written by 10 year olds! And this is their best work! It's kind of sad, I think.

What you say is true, but there are a couple other sides to this.

When you try to read someones input, and it's just one continuious sentence, it's difficult. Some have replied that they don't want to take the time to do it correctly. To me that means that they do not respect the rest of us enough to take the time to do it correctly. Sorry, do not expect me to respect you if you do not respect us.

And at times it's hard to judge someone's character when the content of their post is so garbled you cannot understand it.

I don't believe anyone is expecting that we all become award winning writers. However we should be able to convey the thoughts that we are attempting to pass along to others, and it's not that easy at times with just the written word.

Communication is very important. Doing it correctly is even more important.

And I just cannot let this opportunity pass.

The purpose of communication should be "shared meaning". Communication needs to be constructed with others in mind. We humans often think only of our own purposes and neglect the audience and how they will interpret our messages.

And yes, Stinker is totally banned from this thread. On the other hand, Joanne must be a Saint...she has been around him so long, and put up with so much...and had to figure out what he is saying...
