Hard to argue this one. I do know an awful lot of hard working immigrants.....regardless of heritage

But your dead wrong on this one. Your looking at the nickles and penny's we all pay with our day to day taxes on goods and services......big deal

Now, step back and consider....Healthcare, education and welfare. The dollars are a staggering figure. Most don't even give it a second thought. But you should. Just on healthcare alone. Do you realize that every time a non-documented alien receives healthcare it is written off....kinda. Those costs are passed on to those that pay premiums. Why do you think a Tylenol in the hospital cost 5 bucks....each.

When you get a few minutes look into it. Its not just once a year, twice or maybe even a dozen.......its thousands of times a year people recieve care....for free. I agree, its not just the illegal immigrants, there are a lot of different kinds of people that can't pay. But for you to learn....you got to do the research.

I hope you own a home, look at your tax responsibilities on that home. Some of the taxes will surprise you.

This is not just a simple as paying .067 percent on food

The cost of those that are here illegal hopefully will cause you to reconsider

If not.....

..........hope is lost

Well, I would like to know where you get your info. This a report from the National Academies Press.

http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=5516&page=13

They stated over and over that they were unable to quantify the cost of illegal immigration.

So where are folks getting the billions of dollars estimates? How are those estimates accurate?

There is more speculation than actual facts in the cost reports. I willing to bet that it's alot less than folks make it seem...

Some very good reading here.I believe that immigration legal and illegal is out of control. The fact that immigrants are willing to do types of labor that we Americans don't want to do makes them an attractive ecomonic entity.Greed drives most business, not the long term benefit of the country/citizenry.I am totally against the policy of declaring a person born on U.S. soil citizen automatically. If their mother wasn't a citizen, her child should not be either, regardless of the physical location of the birth.(i.e., if the cat had kittens in the oven,we wouldn't call'em biscuits)Maybe over-simplified,but very clear analogy. Yes,the Native peoples were done a horrible injustice. You may see some getting large sums of money, some building casinos or whatever, but for every one of those, there are dozens living in squalor.I believe America was destined to be,but that does not excuse the actions of some of those that brought it about .Then there were the Chinese who were abused in the building of the railroads and the Aficans whe were brought here as slaves and forced to make others wealthy.
However, all that is in the past, and painful and wrong as it was,we can't undo any of it.The Natives were lied to and taken advantage of at every turn and yes they had laws.Maybe if they had a better immigration policy, they would still be enjoying their way of life ? Now we have laws as the United States of America and lots of those are directly related to when/where/how you can leagally immigrate into this country. We can not continue to absorb these people for very much longer and still have our own unique American culture.I am not saying that we refuse entry to everyone, just that everyone enter legally,no excuses.
We DO NOT live in a Democracy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We live in a REPUBLIC !!! The will of the majority is not what we live by.As a Republic,we are governed by a Constitution.A Democracy will ineveitably destroy itself. If you don't believe me,just go the library or do a search on the web.Given enough time, you may eventually elect enough people that believe what you believe and change the constitution to reflect that belief, but you are still ruled by the constitution, not the will of the majority.
If you desire to live here, you should be seeking to become a citizen and love your new homeland.Somehow, somewhere this notion has been abandoned in favor of "multiculturalism".We need to get back to Americanism, whereby you come to America to become an AMERICAN,not a "Mexican-American","African-American","Irish-American",etc. I am of Scottish,Welsh,Shawnee,English heritage but I call myself an American.Period.I am very proud of my ancestry, but even prouder to be an AMERICAN !!!!!!!!!
I am not against any race because of their language, skin color, native country, etc.I am against people trying to change the America of my fathers,grandfathers,great-grandfathers.It is nearly perfect in it's original form and needs no changing.Otherwise, why are so many so eager to come here ? But if you change it,it won't be the America you need, just the one you want.Beware of what you want, you just may get it.
I will now dis-mount from my high horse and then step down from my soapbox :D

Nelson

I guess where I defer in my train of thought is that the American dream carries the same weight whether it's celebrated in english, spanish, german, etc....

I also read the first line....

1996

"Local Fiscal Effects of Illegal Immigration: Report of a Workshop (1996)"

You realize that is 11 years ago

Sure did...If they couldn't quantify it when there was only 6 million illegal immigrants concetrated in mayor areas, how are they going to quantify it with 12 million spread across most of the US...

If we did that retroactively none of us would be American.

This post is still going on........

This is exactly my point.....exactly..

Our American Culture and the America of our fathers....was shaped by IMMIGRATION....legal and illegal that is what makes us America...

Who are we to now say enough is enough...now that we are here we want to shut the door behind us...?...

This is a classic mixed message....you don't have a problem with illegals...you have a problem with free-loaders.....

The economic impact of illegals is OVERWHELMINGLY positive to the American ecomomy...that fact has never been in dispute.

Cool,

I'll be setting up a tent in your back yard this weekend. I'll be inviting a few family members and friends over in the next few weeks. It's OK, they all do the same thing too.

Now just remember to keep you fridge full of food and and bathrooms clean... We have needs.

While your at it. We need the paper delivered in German. A few German speaking stations on the TV, don't worry about the cable, we'll wire that up ourselves and we'll use the electrical outlet from the garage.

Oh, my sister has a few kids she can't take care of, you'll give her a few hundred each month so she doesn't have to work...ok

Thanks

Your the best

Mike, I now this sounds a bit rediculous, but thats how I feel ...... sometimes.

See I hate all of that free loading....take care of me crap....that is a seperate issue....the free loading, welfare, I hurt my back 12 years ago bullshit is an AMERICAN tradition...

With the amount you pay in taxes where you live... you might want to take him up on his offer. It would be a LOT cheaper. :D

if this sounds rediculous then why did you even post it? A classic example of exageration of the issue at hand. I have to say shit like this makes you look ignorant, no really it does. Being the first son of a 1st gen illegal alien family as you like to say, I can really tell you what it was like to grow up. Once your done reading all the propaganda on the net , ask for an honest opionion from a real illegal alien. I'll give you the facts on how we actually lived, how many times we scammed the hospital for free care, and just about anything else you'd like to know.

You'll also notice that I didn't say everybody.......

But your right, enough said....enough done

This is all pointless anyway

Why should I care about anything so trivial

Sure it does. It's not so much about language as it is about culture. The American dream is about succeeding in the American culture. In order to be a real part of the culture and experience the dream you must become an American. To me,to be an American is to speak the language. All immigrants must adapt to their new country and it's culture in order to become a success. How can you do that if you don't try to learn the language ? You should not have to abandon your native language or beliefs, but they should become secondary to your new homeland. "E Pluribus Unum" is our National motto isn't it ? That is Latin and it means "From Many,One" .Meaning out of many nations , languages, cultures, people came to America to become ONE.We are "One Nation.........." Not many small nations in one place. It's as if Mother America has adopted you.Your old name is gone.Your old life is gone.Your old family is gone. You now have a new name,a new life, and a new family.
It has never been my intent to offend anyone. If I have done so,I humbly apologize.I have no prejudices against anyone.I just firmly believe that we need to become a whole Nation once again and the only way I see to do that is to integrate fully into American society.

First, you didn't offended me. I know you personally and I am extremely grateful to do so.:)

Let me explain my views of what being a american and living the American Dream is.

I believe the American Dream is the opportunity for anyone, regardless of race or ethnic background to pursue happiness. Now being an american is going after that happiness, but at the same time letting others pursue it.

Our common language is english, but it is pretty darn different from the one our fore-fathers spoke. Our diet is pretty different to theirs also. But that doesn't make us less of americans. The values this nation was founded on make it America. It is not the language that is spoken or what our hobbies are.

Early on this thread, someone mention that P.R. is a different country. I remember when I was in elementary school, we used to listen to the Star Spangled Banner(Instrumental) at 8:00 A.M. and would recite The Pledge of Allegiance after, in spanish. I can't speak for the other kinds, but I can tell you that I recited those words with the same strength and belief that any english speaking kid did.

Prometo lealtad a la bandera de los Estados Unidos de América.

Carry the same weight as:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America.

I am not arguing that any person coming to this nation needs to learn english or be part of the team. My argument is, that person can be as valuable as anyone else, before, during and after learning english or officially becoming part of the team...

:withstupid: Without the stupid, lol.

I beleive like all freemen that you can do whatever you want so long as it does not interfere with someone elses right to life, liberty or property. Speak any language or practice any religion you want because it does not change my beliefs and it does not make you any less of an American because of it.

I don't think hispanics call themselves Mexican-American that label is given to them by others who think that all non-white, blue eyed and blond haired people are not true Americans and that applies to all races. Many people can look at a first generation American from Danish decent and automatically assume he is American but those same people see a 10th generation American with Chinese decent and assume he just got here from China.:dontknow:

I personally don't care how a person looks if he lives here he is American not Irish-American, Mexican-American, Japanese-American etc.

Like Rodney said "Can't we all just get along", lol.
