How hard is the rear main seal to replace?

I have a Centerforce clutch kit on the shelf. Was planning to install it myself.
However, when looking under the truck I noticed I am getting some minor seepage from the rear main seal. It's not dripping but the front of the tranny, inspection cover and rear of the oil pan are stained enough to see that it's seeping.

So here's the big delimma.....do I take it in for the rear main seal and try to coax the dealer into throwing the Centerforce and Viperslave in there when they put it back together. I would also be chancing them going nuts over all my mods and voiding parts (if not all) of my warranty. I have no idea how they will react. :dontknow:

Or should I just say screw it and replace the rear main myself when I am throwing the Centerforce in there in my own garage.:dontknow:

I'd like to know what all goes into the rear main replacement. I have done them before and I have seen 1 peice metal seals that are circular and REAL easy to do, and I have seen others that are 2 peice and require the oil pan to be broken loose, etc....(I don't want to do that one again). So anybody know which type we have?

minor seepage is ok. some seepage is normal

from the chrylser manual

Remove transmission (Refer to 21 - TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE/MANUAL - REMOVAL).
Remove clutch and flywheel (Refer to 6 - CLUTCH/CLUTCH DISC - REMOVAL).
NOTE: The oil seal and retainer are serviced as an assembly.

Remove the seal retainer bolts from cylinder block and oil pan (REAR MAIN SEAL AND RETAINER).
Remove the oil seal and retainer (1) assembly (REAR MAIN SEAL AND RETAINER).
installation
Clean the engine block and retainer. Make sure surfaces are clean and free of oil.
Install Special Tool 9060 (1) (seal guide) onto end of crankshaft (Special Tool 9060). Align hole in tool with dowel pin on crankshaft.
1 - CRANKSHAFT REAR OIL SEAL & RETAINER
2 - SPECIAL TOOL 9060
Carefully position retainer/oil seal (1) to block. Tighten the retainer bolts to 11 N·m (95 in. lbs.) (Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal & Retainer Installation).
Install flywheel and clutch (Refer to 6 - CLUTCH/CLUTCH DISC - INSTALLATION).
Install transmission (Refer to 21 - TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE/MANUAL - INSTALLATION).

don't know off hand ... I would be more concerned about getting that tool to install it
 
Well doin it redneck style isnt that bad, the tool is just a seal protector so that you dont screw it up and cut the seal installing it.

You can do a couple things, but now this is backyard style.

Grease upthe seal real good, then take some posterboard, or if you are lucky enough to find a strip of thin flexible plastic about 2 inches wide and 6-8 inches long. Then wrap it around the crank end and slide the seal over it.
But also if you take your time and grease it up good enough and are real careful the seal will slide over the end of the crank without damaging it.

Not the best way, but when in the backyard......:D

I install them that way. I don't like the seal installers, they don't always seat the seals straight. One side will be in further than the other side. The key is just to be careful when first installing the seal over the crank.

Also note the depth that the original seal was installed before you remove it ;)
 
If the seepage is minimal, I wouldnt bother. I had my dealer change mine and it still leaks. They then changed the oil clamp deal and now it leaks more than ever!!! What a PITA!!! Do I dare try a third time????

Oil leak

The rear cam plug was leaking on the silver truck when we tore the motor down. Dealer said it was the rear seal, and I looked and disagreed so told them not to do it. When we got the motor out it was the cam plug.
