got this today............:(

Hi folks,

We know that most of you, if not all of you, are perfectly aware of what the high fuel costs are doing to our trucking industry.

Today, it got a little worse, as high fuel costs have claimed a large trucking company. Jevic Transportation announced today that they are closing the doors permanently, effectively leaving about 2000 people without a job.

We have opened up a thread for you to give your thoughts on this, as it is a very big issue for our industry. It's no longer just the small independents who are being forced out of business, large companies, and company drivers, are being effected by this. Could your company be next?

I seen an article today that predicted $5.00 a gallon gas by mid summer.

I filled up my truck last week, and price of the gas here was already at $4.10. Cost me exactly $100 to fill the tank on my SRT-10

dont want to know aobut the rig:mad:

Hmmm

I know fuel costs are higher, but trucking companies should charge a fuel surcharge, pass the costs down like everyone else. So to say a trucking company went under due to high fuel costs alone is hard to swallow. I am sure there were other factors here. In addition are we hauling less? I would think the volume of items we haul is about the same, therefore other companies will be picking up the slack and need additional employess?

Or am I way off base here?

its really complicated to tell ya the truth, Eddie can chime in and tell more, but from my side
"most " compainies pass the fuel surcharge on to the drivers, some do not, but the price of fuel is changin every day, and its hard to keep up.

I know as in mine they do a surcharge at the first of every week , but the cost may change .10cent by the end of the week.
then too I found out most trucking compainies are going up on rates, or trying to, but at the same time the shippers arent wanting to pay the extra, but the bonus is.........they are chargin the recievers more to ship the product;)

Fuel

I have a fleet of 10 trucks that we use to deliver building materials (mostly locally) and my fuel bill is 30K per month! This on top of everything we receive having a "fuel surcharge" is really cutting into profits.

our fuel bill used to be around 300k a month, now its 800k a month. we do charge a fuel surcharge. the national average for fuel comes in every monday afternoon. one day last week the fuel rose .20 cents per gallon with the miles big companies run you cant make it up. its just gone. where we survive and make money is most fuel matrix's are calculated on 5 to 5.5 mpg. our fleet average is 7.25 to 7.3 we run a million miles a month so its real easy for a large company that doesnt watch what they do to go under.

Here is Phoenix where I get diesel I am paying $4.259, but I also saw some places around the area here getting $4.39 or so for diesel... it costs me $148.00 to fill my tank in my dually.. thank got I am getting 14-15mph with it... and can run about 2.5 weeks.

Its those damn speculators... last time I checked we are paying like $60-70 per barrel surcharge that these freaking speculators have driven up the prices on....

Did you know that it takes only like $6700.00 (yes... six thousand seven hundred dollars) to control 1000 barrels of oil....worth over $126,000!!!! thats how these morons are able to afford to do it on the merchantile exchange... (NYMEX)

Looks what the speculators did to the housing markets... now they are doing it all over again to the energy market... they have ZERO concern for the economy... all they care about is how much they are putting in their pockets...

Everyday gets scarier and scarier.

Everyday fuel costs keep going up - they predict that by the end of the summer - it's going to up well over $5.00 per gallon.

Here's the thing . . . there are over 8500 service stations that can't handle the rising prices. Thousands of old-fashioned pumps can't register more than $3.99 on their spinning mechanical dials and these same pumps can only count up to $99.99 for the total sale. It is difficult and expensive to upgrade, and replacing them is often out of the question for station owners. A kit has to be purchased running approximately $650 per pump and there is currently a 14-week backlog.

Stinker made the comment: "most " compainies pass the fuel surcharge on to the drivers" - I don't know if this is driven by the commodity, but I see in my field (interior design / framing & artwork) that we, the receivers are charged for this fuel surcharge by many of our vendors and the freight companies.

On top of freight charges going through the roof, we are finding it much more difficult to receive our product in a timely manner. Our lead time for glass has just recently tripled! This is due to our vendor's supplier shutting down 2 out of the 5 tanks they run due to the fuel costs to run those tanks. Even if the glass supplier decided to start those 2 tanks back up - it takes 3 months to get it up and running.

I feel blessed that I still have a job but I do wonder how long it will last . . .

When is this going to get any better?

This situation with oil is causing extreme hardship for the U.S.
If it were not for US, Kuwaite,Saudi Arabia,Iraq, etc; would be under
Sodamn Insane by now.
I think it would be perfectly reasonable if those coutries gave us a
reasonable discount, even though if it were free would not make up
for the lives we sacrificed on their behalf.

As an ex business owner I gave discounts to some customers,
and would damn sure give one to a customer if I owed my very life to him!:(

Well, they don't actually have those billions in it, that's the catch. It's all leveraged.....gotta love fake money, they may as well be playing with monopoly money.

I do paving & grading, and between the trucks and the equipment and the prices of blacktop theres alot of sleepless nights!!

but everyday is not a bad day! its just everything we deal with has do with OIL!!

LIKE THIS, BLACKTOP is $62.50 a ton ( & we have 3 tamdoms dumps )
each truck cost about $200-$250 aday in diesel fuel
them we have 3 paving machines, depending on witch one we use it will hold
somewhere around $40-$50 in diesel fuel
And we have 3 skid steer ( new holland, gehl, mustang ) and these damm things are as bad as the dump trucks, but they cost us somewhere between
$40-$75 in diesel fuel about every day to a day and a half!!

So between the diesel fuel in the trucks and equipment
3 loads of blacktop, @ $63 a ton, and praying to GOD that theres no tires that don't blow out, and if theres no mistakes all day

it takes us $3,400-$3,800 everyday for our trucks rollout of the yard everymorning!! and thats on a good day

I HOPE SOMETHING CHANGES FAST AND I MEAN FAST!!!
