Insurance at the Track

I think this issue is a bit more involved than just the vehicle, i.e. a wrecked truck. What about yourself and your physical well being, will your health insurance cover a racing related incident, your auto insurance most likely will not? Do you think your employer's short or long term disability benefits cover you in the event of a personal racing injury? What about any damages you may cause to the track, facilities, properties, injuriies to spectators/bystanders, etc.?

I have attached a link from the SCCA. They do provide various insurance plans to cover their particapnts (and spectators) in/at a SCCA sanctioned event. I don't know if other sanctioning bodies offer similar coverages.

http://www.scca.org/contentpage.aspx?content=83

I believe, for the most though, participant or spectator, you're on your own when it comes to liability. I have been to several major racing events (NASCAR, NHRA, etc.) and the fine print on a spectator ticket basically states by you purchasing the ticket and attending the event you do so at your own/sole risk and that you release/waive the sponsor/promoter, track owner, sanctioning body, etc. of any and all liabilities or claims.

Personally, I have not tracked my truck. But, I do understand that most tracks, even for test and tune sessions, requires the particiapnt to sign off on a liability release/waiver document before the individual/vehicle is allowed to participate in the event. I have attended 2 SRT track experiences and at the time you registered you had to sign off on their release/waiver docs or if you refused to sign, then you couldn't particpate.

For any questions concerning liability, I would consult with the track owner/representative or officials conducting the event before you "sign up".

To protect yourself from the prying eyes of the inurance investigators and their cameras, I would remove the license plates from the vehicle prior to staging/entering the track area. I don't believe you need to display a state license tag in order to race? :dontknow: My $0.02 worth.

Good point John, although I'm still not going to 'track' her..

Here in New Jersey the State Police have a unit that covers every race track. If you are involved in an accident while racing they complete an accident report right on scene, this way you can't remove the crashed vehicle to another location and say it was crashed there or stolen.

become a NHRA member they cover you with a 480k policy but I think it is more towards bodily injury than fixing your vehicle Ill check into it. But I do know It covers you If you get hurt or hurt someone else.

NHRA insurance info theres a number at the bottom for more questions and coverage.

II. NHRA MEMBER CATASTROPHIC MEDICAL POLICY

Provides up to $485,000 in excess medical benefits and up to $40,000 in excess Dismemberment benefits to current NHRA members, as determined solely by the membership records of NHRA, who sustain accidental bodily injury while attending or participating in a covered drag racing event at NHRA member tracks.

INSURANCE SUMMARY

In the event an NHRA MEMBER PARTICIPANT (as defined in the policy) is accidentally injured at a covered NHRA Member Track event, the previously described coverages would be in effect for eligible medical expenses in the following order, and as applicable:

Any other medical coverage available to a participant applies up to the limits of that policy or plan.
The NHRA Member Track insurance responds to the next $15,000 of medical costs.
The NHRA Member/Catastrophic Medical insurance applies in excess of the NHRA Member Track insurance up to a total limit of $485,000.
The Participant Accident policy for National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) is an Excess Policy, which means that coverage is not available until all other insurance, self-insurance, or governmental plans available to the participant are exhausted. Any medical benefits paid to a non-participant NHRA member are subject to a $20,000 deductible.

Coverage pays Reasonable Expenses for Medical or Dental care if:

a) the first expense is incurred within 60 days after the accident; and
b) the expense is incurred within 3 years after the accident.
Reasonable Expenses means expenses which do not exceed those generally charged for similar Medical or Dental Care in the local area where treatment is rendered.

Medical or Dental care means the necessary medical, dental or surgical treatment, services or supplies, hospital, nursing and ambulance services. All Medical or Dental Care must be provided by a legally qualified physician or dentist for the sole purpose of treating the injury, and all coverages are subject to specific limitations and exclusions.

INSURANCE SUMMARY

The Participant Accident coverages described in this Bulletin are provided by different insurance agents and insurance companies, depending on the type of event.

If you have general questions (not related to a specific claim) regarding Participant Accident coverages, you may contact Ms. Trendolyn Walters at Wells Fargo Motorsports, P. O. Box 983, Houston, TX 77001-0983. Ms. Walters can be reached at: (800) 364-9476, Ext. 731, or email her at [email protected]. You may also contact Ms. Walters if you have any questions regarding the NHRA Member Catastrophic coverage.

If you've been injured and have questions regarding your claim, please contact the insurance company that is handling your claim. If you do not have any information about the insurance company that is handling your claim, please contact the track where your incident occurred. The track official will provide you with the name and phone number for the insurance company.

If you are unsuccessful in obtaining insurance information from the track, please contact Nancy Holland at (800)364-9476, Ext 726, or email her at [email protected].

III. GENERAL LIABILITY COVERAGE

Commercial General Liability insurance is in effect for all covered NHRA drag racing events that are conducted at NHRA member tracks and for which a premium has been paid to the insurance company. Additional insured coverage is automatically included for race car drivers, their crew, event sponsors, and any person or organization owning or sponsoring racing vehicles or racing vehicle drivers, in the event of a covered liability claim arising out of the track's operations. The minimum limit of liability insurance in effect is $1,000,000 per occurrence. The limit of liability in effect at Lucas Oil events and National Events is substantially higher.

If you want to consider purchasing your own Liability coverage that would apply in excess of this coverage, please contact Jennifer Harrison at Wells Fargo Motorsports. Her number is (800) 364-9476 Ext 719. You can also e-mail her at [email protected]

More info for the serious racers.

National Event Liability Insurance Information

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is a brief summary of the National Event Commercial General Liability insurance coverage provided by NHRA to racers and their crews and racing vehicle owners and sponsors, as additional insureds on NHRA's policy:

$30,000,000 per occurrence for Bodily Injury claims.
$30,000,000 per occurrence for Property Damage claims, except for Property Damage to racing vehicles located in a restricted area.
$50,000 per occurrence for Property Damage Liability claims to racing vehicles of others located in a restricted area, subject to a $5,000 deductible.
Because all insurance policies contain limitations and exclusions that may eliminate or reduce coverage, you should note that, among other exclusions, no coverage is provided for:

Claims made against racers, their crew or racing vehicle owners arising out of a racing vehicle owner's, racer's or crew member's ownership, maintenance, use or entrustment to others of any ATV, golf cart or motorized two wheel vehicle.
Certain pollution claims.
Intentionally caused injuries or damages.
Any claims unrelated to NHRA's operations, premises or locations owned or rented by NHRA.
Also, in the event of a serious claim, the limit of insurance on the policy may be shared by many other people, such as other racers, crewmembers, NHRA, sponsors, landowners and others. This could cause your coverage to be significantly reduced or even eliminated.

This Commercial General Liability insurance coverage is afforded to you in the event a liability claim is made against you. It does not cover you for your own bodily injuries or property damage. Because of the exclusions and limitations, and depending on your particular circumstances, you may want to consider purchasing your own Commercial General Liability policy, as some racers and sponsors already have.

If you have any questions about coverage, contact Wells Fargo Motorsports at (800) 364-9476, extension 754, and ask to speak with Nancy Holland. If you wish to purchase your own policy, please contact Nancy Holland at extension 726, or you may email her at [email protected] You may also contact Wells Fargo Motorsports online at www.wellsfargo.com/wfis .

Good info for NHRA -- similar to SCCA's and under written by Wells Fargo as well.

Are these policies good at local or open track events? I just want to dabble alittle (for now). But as many have mentioned, being careful is a major component and realistically it's probably safer than idiots or crappy drivers on the street.

most sactioned tracks that are IHRA NHRA SCCA, if they hold any big races there then more than likely it is a sactioned track.

I would check with the track and event sponsor to see if your sanctioning body insurance coverage applies. Also, I would read over the specific policy you have to see what is covered and what is not. DD is correct, the track needs to be sanctioned for the coverage to apply and I believe the event would also have to be sanctioned by NHRA, SCCA, etc.

The bottom line is........Just be careful. No of us can drive like John Force or are getting paid like him. So when it pulls hard to right or left, get out of it. All the crashes I have seen, were because the guys would not let off the gas pedal and lost it.

Everyone says "take it to the track" but you vehicle isn't covered at the track. :dontknow:

This is the only thing I have found. I would think a call to this guy would get the right answer.

Coverage << this ONLY covers drag cars. Not street cars on the strip.
