My truck has been missing and I haven't got into diagnosis yet but last night i was thinking about the stock plug wires in conjunction with my Mopar long tube headers. I didn't coat them nor wrap them nor put in any extra heat shields. Would it be possible after a year of heavy use that the heat from the headers deteriorated the integrity of the stock plug wires to the point where they will cause a miss? The missing occurs from 180-210 degrees....on start up she runs good. The stock wires seem kinda skimpy for such a big engine. Maybe its time to yank the manifold and redo the wires to see if that fixes it before taking it to a shop to try and diagnos it.:dontknow:

my understanding is yes over time high temps will affect the plug wires, you might look into getting a set of high temp wires.

i think i've heard of this before too....taking off that intake manifold is going to be a jolly ol time:D That will take at least 2 cases of miller lite and a couple days!

If anyone has any instructions on how to remove the intake mani....I'd love to read them!;)

If you have an Ohm meter you can check for resistance on them, but that still requires pulling the intake. If your going to that trouble, pick up a pair of MSD's or the ones that Gary sells.

Plug wires will break down easily bro, Moroso makes a sleeve that is very heat resistant, I think Garys has the same sleeve.

The intake.

remove throttle body and all vacum hoses, remove clips from injectrors, get a tool from autozone and remove the fuel line, remove the bolts holding the fuel rails and injectors and remove the rails by taking from one side to another.
then remove all bolts from intake, back two, take a ton of patience bud:D

yep, the stock wires break down fairly fast, especially when the truck is raced, as the under hood temps build up. the plug wires we have made for us now, can handle 1200 degrees, and we have seen them on Twin turbo vipers making 1400 hp.
plus if you run nos, then the plugs deteriote rapidly too. a set of good qaulity plug wires are worth the time and expense even on a mild engine.

No need. Just get yourself someone with hands small enough to fit between the runners. My wife and I swapped out the wires pretty quickly without removing it.

are you chittin me!?? can I borrow your wife!?:p ;) :D J/K.....but really it can be done!?

If you take each wire individually, and tape the new wire to the end, when you pull the old wire out, the new wire will already be run.

We use this trick when pulling network cabling. You have to be very careful not to pull too hard or fast :)rolleyes:), but it should work.

Then the only challenge is plugging the wires into the "Distro". (I know it's not technically a distributor.)

I believe the term you are looking for is Coil Pack :D :p

But if you plan on changing the plugs i would suggest Boomers plugs for your
application just because his can withstand a ton of heat.. I think with the MSDs and the mopar long tubes you would
probly have to run those heat shield spark plug boots you can buy at Pep boys
and auto zone..

just a guess :D

I'll be replacing mine soon. I'll probably be looking for the ceramic boot style wires like I use on my race car.

Call me!!:burnout:
Your plugs are probably toast!,Creating high resistence,Thus frying your wires! Replacing the wires isn,t that big a deal, just time consuming!!!:2in1:
SPRAY EATS PLUGS!!!!!!!!!!!:D :D

I'll call you this week.....I'll try replacing all the plugs first....if that don't fix it I'll do the wires and if that don't do it then to the shop:(

replace all the plugs last night.......found one boot that was wayyyy loose and the metal connection inside the boot cam off....I stripped some of the wire back to see if I could repair it....the first 4 inches inside the wire from teh boot was all dust!!! FRIED like Rice! Going to see If I can just replace that one wire.....if that don't work off comes the intake and on goes a new set of wires.

dude, do it right, and pull the intake, and replace them ALL. dont skimp on the details. all 10 wires have been on there and firing the same amount of times, same engine heat, etc. do it right, and be done with her. you will be glad you did.
i have 1 set of black 1200 wires here i can send you out today

I hear ya.....but here is the rest of the story.

When I first replaced the plugs one of the connectors inside the boot came off. I was able to repair and re-crimp the wire in the boot......when I went ot replace them this time.....that same wire is the one that had the problem. It was completely severed. I would take a guess and say that because that connection was jepordized and half assed that it probably let to that wire frying. Are the rest like that? Maybe so maybe not. I have a complimentary set of stock wires coming so I am going to replace the #7 wire and take her for a spin. If she's still running like poop I'll do it right. I just don't have the time to make a big project out of this right now. I'll let ya know.....BTW....Black would be my color:D
