I am sorry to sound stupid but i just bought my 06 QC and i was wondering what u are talking about draining the catch can what is that and what does it do? and why does it need to be drained?Kevan said:Yes.

Each time I get back to the house after a fill up, the hood gets popped and the cup comes out (after the engine bay cools, of course).
The contents of the cup are then poured into the oil change tray.
Cup gets wiped down and put back in the tool box.
It's pretty high tech. I should probably take some pictures and post them.

The catch can is an item that one of our vendors sell (JMB Powder Coating). It is usually an add on that comes with the Cold Air Intake (CAI). The catch can collects crank case vapors, oil, and condensation.nightrunner06 said:

I am about to install a CAI. Is the gunk a result of the CAI? Is the catch can absolutely necessary? Is it worth the maintenance trouble? Where does the gunk come from? Everything smells clean and has always been that way. But if I add the catch can with the CAI will I start smelling vapors too? Why am I asking so many questions?:dontknow:

The vapor smell is the nature of the beast, about the only ways to get rid of it is to reroute the filter to a different place outside the engine compartment. This can be done using 3/4" oil rated hose/tubing. I have never smelled this personally on my 05 RC, but what seems weird is that the overwhelming majority is from QC owners. Not sure what would be different there, but??? I always run my AC in recirculate though and that may be the difference. Keeping it drained will also reduce/eliminate the smell.
Is a catch can a performance mod? IMO yes it is because it is eliminating oil from entering into the intake manifold like the stock system. Oil in the combustion chamber brings a much higher chance of detonation. Pull your TB off on any SRT10 motor with the stock setup and you will see oil puddled up right behind the TB in the intake manifold.

The little bits of smoke coming off the catch can is normal, esp. after a hard drive. The oil and gunk that the catch can is catching isn't exactly luke warm.
Like JMB, my 05 RC hasn't ever produced a 'stank' in the cab. I run my A/C in all modes. I don't think the QC's have different heater/AC components.
It could have something to do with climate (maybe?).
Nah. It's probably fine. Normally the oil that K&N puts on there lasts a while, but it can dry out (esp. in our hotass engine bay).amtrucker22 said:

I know in alot of instances and Justin can elaborate on this, that some have moved the catch can to the frame rail, or run it behind the engine or cab, that way the "smell" isnt noticed

Drained my catch can yesterday and took a quick picture of the fluid that comes out of it. Sorry for the not so great camera phone picture. It is a rusty orange type color... Just thought some people would like to see what it looks like. The can was full at just under two weeks since I last emptied it.
The more blow by you have the more often you will have to empty the can.
Blow by is produced by various things...some of them nasty. (Bad rings, piston damage, out of round cylinders...all of which occur over time)
Some blow by is produced naturally in many engines...some produce none...
So there is really no standard. If you get a considerable amount...start looking for the cause...because there is a reason....

I drained mine for the first time after reading this post.It was about half full with the same type of chit in it. Still getting that stinking vapor smell.May have to think of relocation as well.
Hey do you relocate it and what would be involved? I'm going to do my CAI and catch can when it fines up enough to get outside for the day. I would like to do it "right" the first time. Anyone have some close up shots of their set up from different angles to make the install a little quicker/easier?
