Lets talk Diesel...What's our competition???

if the guy has a 98 truck or older it's a good chance it's the 12 valve cummins and makes cheaper/easier horsepower gains than the new ones.the new ones come from the factory with more but the fuel rail pressure is like 28,000 psi.plus with the computers/chip a lot of people are "stacking" them togeather. and making big numbers.the black smoke is more raw fuel getting burnt than the truck can handle.exhaust temps are the worst ememy.i haven't messed with mine.like to tow with it

I have now bought 14 vehicles from Tom myself.

I have also been aware of Dr. Performance since 1993. Dave Smith Motors at that time sold his modified trucks until he was screwing customers over.

Were you ever a member of the TDR (Turbo Diesel Registry)?:dontknow: Is so you would know what I'm talking about.

A fairly good place to go for modifing a diesel in the Seattle area is the Power Shop in Enumclaw.
I have known of those guys since my friend Kelly Kahne (yes Kasey Kahne's Dad) introduced me to those guys and yes they are really good HOWEVER Dr. Power/Performance is the only one recognized by DODGE to work on these trucks and still be covered by the warranty. Sorry Monkey Nuts but this dude is the shiznit!!!!:D

Actually, the newer High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) injection is much easier to make horsepower. The older diesel injections systems were mechanical, not electronic, so there were limitations on how the fuel was controlled. You basically controlled injection timing by adjusting the pump to the engine similar to timing a camshaft. Since HPCR is all electronically controlled, you can program the injector to fire an optimal times. That is how they are getting these newer diesels to make so much power and still meet emissions standards. In fact the newest versions have 3 injection events for every power stroke. There is the pilot injection that starts the burn, the main injection event, and a third to complete fuel burn for emissions. The HPCR injection technology was developed by Bosch and was used in European diesels long before it made it hear. Now Dodge, GM, and Ford use the same Bosch system (with minor variations) on their diesel engines.

The stock rail pressure varies from 5000psi at idle to 23,500psi at WOT. The pop-off valve pressure on the Cummins is 29,000psi. Most performance fueling modules do one or a combination of three things; increase the rail pressure (including ramp-up pressure at part throttle), adjust injection timing, or increase injection duration. I did what was called stacking. I had a pressure module that ramped up rail pressure quickly at part throttle and I had downloader that adjusted timing and duration. Between the two I could add up to 200HP and 350ft/lbs of torque over the stock rating of 305HP/555ft/lbs. Between the two modules it took me a total of 40 minutes to install them. The downloader took 15 minutes to flash the PCM and the fueling module took about 30 minutes to route the wires and plug it in the factory harness. Both modules cost me under $800 together. What else can you get 200HP out of for less that $800? In fact the 04.5’+ Cummins you can get a Bully Dog downloader that had a 200HP flash program on it called Crazy Larry.

For a diesel, controlling EGT’s is critical. On the mild settings, I could hit 1300 degrees pre-turbo by the time I hit 5th gear. I went with a 4â€￾ turbo back exhaust with no muffler to control EGT’s and a K&N FIPK. Between the two I was able to lower EGT’s by an average of 150 degrees. The next option would have been to upgrade the turbo to an HTB2. That would have probably lowered them another 300 degrees. I was pushing 35psi of boost with the stock turbo, but that is pretty much the limit. Most guys upgrade theirs and have been known to push 50psi without an internal upgrades.

Diesel performance is a whole other animal than our gassers. Making horsepower is as simple as adding more fuel and air/boost.

Well, I went to Indy Raceway Park Friday night and I was a little disappointed. There were a bunch of diesels with huge stacks belching black smoke out the top and they were mostly 14's and some 13's. One guy had a twin turbo Dodge and I was talking to him asking him what he ran. He said he wasn't for sure because he stretched his head bolts on his first run. When he had just one turbo he said he was about 1600lbs of torque running 11.6 or 11.3....I can't remember for sure but it was around there. Very impressive. He had MT streets on all four corners.

One guy posted "look out for the ones with 4 or 5" stacks belching black smoke...Well...That's not the end all be all. They can have those but still be slow. It just goes to show you gotta run one to really find out the potential.

I've had two that were modded. One with stacks! The one I sold for the SRT had a TST stacked with a Ramifier. It was a 6 speed and from a dig it was a bitch, but from a roll it would haul ass. Embarassed more than a couple of mustangs, camaros, M3's on the interstate.

My current 06 dually just has a small (100 hp max) box on it. Now with the big heavvy 22.5" peterbuilt wheels its a little slow, so saving for twins and some more fuel. I'd love to tow the SRT to the track and run low 11's, unhook from the trailer and run 12's in the tow rig!

Black smoke doesn't always mean fast as hell. Faster yes, but unless he's got a bigger turbo he won't be able to push it that long. The ones you have to watch out for look like they're shitting coal and then when the boost comes up turns light grey. He's got the fuel and the air.

And Silverback is right... Dr. Performance is closing on Hennessy for the number of customers he's fu@#*d

Its disgusting a diesel can run that fast. I wanna go puke now.

BAAHHAHAHAHAH!!!! ....... Go Puke, my friend... "cause it's TRUE. :D  I would have kept my Diesel... but it was just too big of a PITA to park. :dontknow:

They can make SERIOUS HP...

They do make serious HP:rock: . the only reason Jake really sold his was because it was BLACK :p ;)

i think its cool as hell they can get the numbers they do! my dad has an 05 crew cab powerstroke, and bone stock it will suprise you! now on the other hand we could have all bought them, and turned them into monsters, but there is something to be said about owning a vary low production number, street legal race truck with a viper motor! Viper Motor! IMHO the more of those diesel"s they pounch out the more invaluable our trucks will become. oh yeah my dads truck is worth less then my 04 rc and he only has 20k on it, and i paid a whole lot less then he did!! wish you guys could see the look on his face when roll in back home with the rc, i cant keep him out of it!!:D
