if the guy has a 98 truck or older it's a good chance it's the 12 valve cummins and makes cheaper/easier horsepower gains than the new ones.the new ones come from the factory with more but the fuel rail pressure is like 28,000 psi.plus with the computers/chip a lot of people are "stacking" them togeather. and making big numbers.the black smoke is more raw fuel getting burnt than the truck can handle.exhaust temps are the worst ememy.i haven't messed with mine.like to tow with it
