Has anyone painted their own rims? I have seen it on Youtube and it looks fairly simple, but my brother (a painter) says that its harder than it looks and even he pays to get rims done.

I have NightRunner rims, so they have a chip here and there in them.

Index cards are your friend.......slip them in between your tire and wheel so you don't get paint on your tires. Our wheels, since they're not that deep, wouldn't be difficult. Hardest part in my opinion is taking the wheels off and putting them back on.

use a red scotchbrite, scuff the entire wheel up... everywhere... in the cracks, creases, etc.

prime, paint...

it's not hard, just time consuming... very time consuming:mad:

i did mine about two years ago... with satin black engine enamel... i was in a pinch and getting ready for panama and didn't have time to base and clear...

i have the paint and clear, but the truth is, i did it as a temporary thing and ended up leaving it... i'm going to redo them in the spring... not cuz they really need it, but there's a few nicks here and there from taking the rear wheels off, curbs, whatever, but truthfully, i'm surprised and they actually look pretty good...

hardest part is the prep work...

degrease
wash
dry
sand/scuff
wipe with prep-solve or similar final prep
tape off
prime
paint
clear
reinstall
have a beer

I had mine powdercoated. I painted wheels in the past and although they turn out decent spending just a tad bit more was worth it. All that work or cleaning, preping and 30 dollars worth of paint / or about 100-150 bucks and drop them up and them pick them back up looking brand new

Yeah, as much as I wanted mine powdercoated, being I'm a painter I decided to do them myself even though years of experience told me otherwise. I used all top quality products and application was by the book. I still have a chip already and it's only been a coule months

Powdercoat is much more resilient to chips and scratches for sure and the small amount more to have them done is similar to having to pay someone to paint them, yet powdercoat will last years longer.;)
