Performing cam upgrade...

larger valves would not hurt either. if ya make them titanium with a good set of springs i believe you could raise the red line too.
well titanium is overrated really, and the valve spring rate is very important, but no we are gonna do a stock configuration

doubt if ya could beat a stainless steel valve, stainless steel gives me wood, bee hive springs with titanium retainers would be a good combo, IMVHO:rock: :burnout:

wow lots of info there ronnie thanks for typing it up!... man your right... time to make a move hahahaha. thanks for the explanation sir... but so i under stand this correctly heads are kinda like cams just cause they are big an choppy doesn't mean they perform well ..."To much flow isn't always a good thing" i get what you are saying about the burn pattern also my heads will be coming off the truck soon i'll have to check it out... now i'm kinda curious

Tooloe-

It's kinda cool when you get looking around inside an engine; and it can give you lots of clues about what is actually going on in there!

After it is all said and done, the combustion chamber is where the power comes from.

it will be awhile on Eddies , but he jsut wants 800 street hp, it should be capable of 1200+ , but he wants it to last a good long time;)

You can see the results of a cam swap in #040. It pulls the front tires now once it hits the power band..
The new cam really woke it up...

depends if its a kohler or a briggs n stratton, if its a kohler you get substantial gains in the trq department, probably be able to cut the sawgrass at 9 inch high intervals.
now on the briggs model if its a 5hp you can gain up to 3.5 hp, but its more of a top end intake tract, you want be able to get thru the thick stuff, but in normal cutting mode you should be able to gain at least 2.9 seconds per strip

now if you change the intake on the kohler and go to a 4 inch intake, port it and install some bigger valves and a true cold air intake the brings in air from a built in beer cooler than you will obtain the biggest gains, the bigger valves will allow more of the cold air into the combustion chamber and allow for better burn,

with that combination you can get up to almost 12 hp at the crank, but be careful not to run at full throttle too long, at full throttle the rod will actually flex, as it flexs, it will ease the piston in to slapping the cylinder wall and eventually open up a window in the side of the block.
but short burst for the xtra tall weeds and you should be good, oh and be sure to run c16 fuel, the 112 octane willl help out with the cooling effiecincy

Correct.

My heads were ported by Joe Donovan. They flowed almost exactly the same as Greg Goodes heads (slightly lower numbers but real close). I ran Belanger Headers/mids with high flow cats, ported the intake runners, port matched all gaskets (intake and exhaust), ported throttle body. My set up was tuned by Joe and there is no one better at getting the most out of a tune.

My cam was ground for maximum torque, NOT PEAK HP. If that had been my goal I know I could have hit 550 rwhp. IMO my set up was much better than a peak HP setup. I beat a 630 rwhp Paxton truck EVERY TIME I RACED HIM on the street and on the 1/4 mile track.

IMHO, you are going to need the Strikers to hit 600 rwhp N/A and only if your tuner is real good.;)

If I had an unlimited budget, I'd have GG port the Strikers. They CAN be improved. ;)

To get to the stated power goals I would think bigger valves may at least need to be an option. I think Tim's heads from PBJ had them.

I may and probably will not achieve it, but what I want is a basic PP heads, springs , pushrods, new valves, port the intake, a tb, oem manifolds no cats, custom cam, and jsut a cat back, and some good ol fashioned tuning.

something to give the guys an idea of what is possible for a moderate amount of dinero;)

Again, I am a big supporter of what you are attempting. I would argue though that if you are going to go with new valves anyway, a size larger on the intake and exhaust wouldn't be a huge incremental cost. I say get what you can out of the stock heads while you have 'em off. Almost like replacing the cam with another stocker.

I think the big savings you are proposing are in the porting/setup of the heads and using the stock rockers (aftermarket arms all seem to cost big money). But, I will definitely stay tuned. :D

Like anything worth doing, it becomes a how much to you want to spend kind of thing....

A WELL ported factory Gen III head with bigger Valves and C.N.C.'d ports will flow an honest, high quality, 300 c.f.m. @.600".

BUT now it starts to leave the realm of an economical approach to the project...:(

yes but thats one of the nice things about being in the middle of nascar country, and having friends that are in the middle of all there engine development:D
get all kinds of new development and experience for a fraction of what it would cost most folks

we installed eddies crank the other day , and gave it a spin.............................................I think its still spinning today:burnout: :burnout:

You are in a great area, that's for sure; I'll get down there one day.

I know Jeff Morys does R&D work for NASCAR and Roush and if there is power to be found, those boys will find it !
Between that and the development in Pro Stock, things just keep getter better ..

Take care,

Ronnie

PS Those cranks are near 100 pounds, so don't spin it too fast, it might get away on ya...:D
Are you going to go the grooved upper (Gen IV) route?

Dang. Is he making that kinda power through cats, or is that an off-highway only package? I figure that's a runwhatchyabrung kinda race for daily drivers...

I keep telling my buddy with a Prius that I will run him with my pushmower. Of course the problem with the Toyautos anymore ain't gettin' goin' down the track, it's stoppin' before it runs out... :D
