Popped her cherry

everyone's tactic for racing is slightly different...

i've noticed no difference in going through the water box vs. going around it... of course... i heat up street tires and there's no question that, IMO it's better...

now... i don't care if i waste tires...

so there's a difference in glazing the tires or making them sticky...

this is with my experiences at tracks that i'm familiar with, and i do the same thing at tracks i'm not familiar with...

BUT... with all these miles, i'm a little consistent with the truck in general;)

Second gear, 4-5k rpm, power brake for 1-2 seconds then let go and burn forward 10 feet. Not a whole lotta smoke, but it gets hot enough to put on a little show.

Old colt said his exhaust tips did the same thing before his cam swap

Just curious if Torrie's tune is a dyno tune or a canned tune. I am sure they run rich if it is canned.

Bah STFU. I knew the truck had a little dick when i got it. But it looked purdy and i wasnt planning on spending much time at the track. its still win win.

Plugs go in this sunday. Dont think im going to mess with the wires/coils with this few miles. Its a PITA to remove the intake to get to it, and im not patient enough to try it without removing.

Truck sounds rich, smells rich (even with HFC), feels rich, and is smutting up the tips after 20-30 miles.

Its just speculation atm. There were a few 06's that put down some weak numbers, even with heavy mods, and no matter how aggressive the tune, little to no improvement in power.

With the high bleed hydraulic lifters it would be hard to degree the cam at TDC and verify whether it was ground off a few degrees to pass emissions or whatever.

It seams the only way to verify this being the issue, with the amount of time effort and money involved to diagnose it, is to go ahead and swap out the cam with a performance one. $5,000+

After I installed my headers and catless mids I noticed a difference, but it wasn't until I installed my SCT from Torrie later that day that I noticed a REAL difference.

I'm planning on getting my 10 on a dyno soon so maybe that will give me an indication on the cam or not.

Torrie's tune is his tune after having experience with the trucks and certain mods. They are a canned tune and still not perfect but not bad at all. In my QC I did headers, catless mids, U/D pullet, K&N filter, coils, wires, plugs, throttle body all at once and i thought it was weak. Loaded Torrie's canned tune and it felt alot better. Drove down to get dyno tuned by him the next day and i swear this was my best mod to date! Tuned on the dyno by Torrie is where its at.

But he may still be rich from what he says.....he needs to get a wideband and see where he is WOT........

LOL... I think I was there the day that you had yours dyno tuned.... :D

I know Torries tunes are it (I even have one on my GTO). But I can tell you when he dyno'd tuned my truck he had to run it 3 or 4 times on the dyno to fine tuned it. I am sure his canned tunes are close, but when he dyno tunes he is spot on! :elefant:

That was the only reason why I asked.

It's not Torries tune giving you those A/F numbers. Torries tune puts you right at 12.5 - 12.7 at WOT, on an N/A truck. Now, if it's FI or NOS, then yeah, he'll keep you on the fat side. But there's no reason for his N/A tune to be that rich and normally it's not.

Preliminary statement; My truck is NA and this is a very POSITIVE reflection on Torrie's methods.

As stated above by SANTEEN, this was not the case in my expirience. Again, I utilized an AEM wideband (properly installed), made sure ALL my other mods and tuning were complete right down to fresh plugs. Ran the truck with stock tune and found it a bit lean below 3,500 and rich up top (11.3:1). Plugged in Torries tune (aimed at my mods) and ran the same run under the same conditions. Truck was richer (still under 12:1) in the middle, but the timing bump that comes with it is noticable!! Up top I was graphing out at 10.9:1 at 5,500 rpm. This is VERY SMART for Torrie to do. Keeps a safe combustion environment with an unknown but similar entity. I worked with Torrie over a three day weekend to dial in the tune. I ran the truck three separate mornings w/ identical conditions. Final result after three revisions was: a VERY NICE 12.5 - 12.7 across the rpm band to 5,500.

You need to either get an A/F gauge on there, or get it on a dyno with a wideband. Your A/F should be around 12.5 at WOT, with Torries tune.

I agree on getting the wideband. Torries initial tune will be safe rich. He cannot determine your overall conditions.

I would venture to say that Torrie's tunes are generally based off extensive dyno tuning sessions. Allowing him to maximize timing advance at all RPM's. It looks safe and smart to "cushion" the tunes with extra fuel to keep combustion temperatures down. I like that! I would definitley have hime tune on a dyno in person. However, he is over 2,000 miles away.

That's why Torrie is so good and has a great reputation. He even assisted me on a Holiday!!:congrats:

I guess my comments were more pointed to Jeff since he is here on the Gulf Coast and not too far from Torrie.

But if I was you the next time I had my truck dyno'd I would try to coordinate with Torrie so he can dyno tune over the phone/email.

Torrie has the best customer service out there. There is no doubt in my mind that Torrie has dyno-tuning skills!

I want to get the cats off, replace o2 sensor, plugs, throttle body. Being im moving to DC the end of october i might wait and have the dyno tune done there. But i still want to have it dyno'd here to see whats up.
