Here in Texas if you buy 2 new tires they will not put them on the front. None of the major tire stores will install them on the front. I always put the best on the front cause in case of a blowout I did not want it to be on the front. “Newâ€￾ date supposedly shows that most wrecks are cause by the back wheels braking loose and the car or truck fishtailing. Out of the many wrecks I have had (probably 10) not one was from fishtailing. Speed, drinking or just plain stupid but never from the rear tires braking traction. Question----is Texas the only state doing such non-sense or are there others. You guys with snow and ice may see a need but we see snow every 20 years and then it last for around 4 hours and out in Odessa where I grew up the rainfall is about 10 inches a year. Hard for me to get a grip on this best tire on the rear stuff. Am I wrong?

Walmart and Discount tire in McAllen plus Discount tire in Greenville and Rockwall Tx refused to put best on the front. Put them on the back and I brought in home and switched them. Discount tire refused to even mount them anywhere but the rear. These are the only 4 places I tried but the agent said that all the major dealer in Rockwall Texas were following suit.

Discount Tire here in Colorado is the same way. They swear that the new tires always need to go on the drive wheels. The kicker is that when went to buy my last two tires I asked them if they could rotate the tires that were on the truck (2 tires a couple months old and two original Pirelli's) the guy wouldn't do it. I explained that I wanted the old tires on the back for a day so I could grab video of me doing burnouts, etc, he wouldn't do it. Keep in mind I had two brand new tires sitting in his shop, that were going to replace the Pirelli's. I went down the street to Big O. They rotated the tires so I could smoke the Pirelli's off, then put the new one's on the front, just like I asked.

Most places here in maryland won't even mount new tires inless you buy from them.

When I bought the nittos, had to hit up a rim shop just to have them mounted. Some areas have crazy laws about tires.

I always put my new tires in the front. If tires are going to loose traction I would rather it be the back tires. I know how to slide a car/truck when the back tires break loose (usually on purpose) but having the front tires hydroplane and having no control sucks!!

informative vidio but as I said, wet road. I drove home the other night from Houston (269 miles) and passed a sting of cars. Sorry but I got the 10 up to 110 mph to pass. At that speed I want my best rubber on the front. A blown tire at 110 mph best not be on the front. So little rain where I live that I am going with best on the front. thanks for the imput, just wondering if the tire places elsewhere had this regulation.

When I worked at Discount we highly recommended it to customers to mount new on the rear. Towards the end of my time there we started making customers sign off on a sheet if they wanted the new on the front.
It's been over a year since I've worked there so they may have gotten even stricter not mounting them on the front period.

Caveman, if I'm understanding your post correctly you wanted them to put the stock/original tires on the rear? If so then the tires were probably over 7 years old. If they were Discount will not touch them.

Not the case here, I've never had that issue the only mounting issue I have had is some stores won't mount unless you buy them from there but that's easily over come.

Is it just me or would you want the best grip tires on the front that way you have grip when you turn instead of pushing through the turn or hydroplaning you wouldn't be able to regain control at all?

Or you could make the case that you need to good rubber on your drive tires for cases of reckless driving so I can see both sides

Tire shops don't make most of their money on tires if I'm not mistaken, they make it on mounting, rotate/balance, and things like that. So I'm surprised they would turn away business.

I bought two new tires and asked them to put them on the front. They refused. So I drove around with two new tires in the rear, for a few months. When I ordered two more new tires, I asked if we could rotate the tires that were on it, prior to installing the new ones. Discount wouldn't do it. I don't need a company to protect me from myself. I wanted the old oldest tires on the rear so I could have some fun. They wouldn't do what the customer (me) wanted, so I went elsewhere. Hope that makes more sense.

They tried that on me at the walmart tire center on my 95. so I screwed with em and told em it was all wheel drive.

I believe in trickledown economics. If the big guys ain’t making money they don’t employ me. But this nanny state trickledown big government protecting me from me is going too far. When major companies start deciding what is best for my safety then it’s time I stop using them. Discount tire just lost my business. I will find a tire dealer that sells tires not attempt to tell the guy that pays their salary what is best for my safety. Thanks for all the input guys.

I was thinking the same thing. I am buying the tires they will put them where I want them or I will find another store that will.

Why not just let the tire shop put the tires on and then go home and rotate the tires to where you want. Isn't the mounting n balancing the major concern?

exactly what I did but if need to re-balance then they switch back. always the best to the back. could just spring for a balancing machine myself. :D

I didn't see it this way at all. I am paying for them to put tires on my vehicle. They will put them where I want them or they want get my businesses at all.
