Shifter squeaks

I know this is an old thread, but my Gen 2 JTSVP shifter is doing the same thing! I'm going to get it apart this weekend, and I will get a video.

Mine squeeked from the second i installed it. Got worst when it got hot. I ended up taking the 4 bolts of the top plate off and removing the guts, and quite literally filling it with red wheel bearing grease to make it stop. I tried more graphite and that didnt help at all. If the squeek comes back, I'm gonna melt the shifter with my torch and go find a b&m. I took a video of it but it sounded just like the video the original poster made. My plastic cup was fine, but i even tried a bronze one and same noise.

Lucky me, I ended up with chaynick's B&M shifter recently. I'm currently having the shift lever Chromed. Should look nice when it's done. ;)

FWIW, Chaynick is back to using Tony's shifter. He bought a new one, no squeak either. Tried everything on the first one and finally gave up on it, just kept on squeaking. Maybe he'll chime in.

I refuse to pay that much for another new shifter because my new one squeeks. Its a great shifter but that noise will drive me absolutely insane if it comes back. And the reason it does it when it gets hot, is metal expands when it heats so the tolerances get tighter. I am hoping grease solved it for good but only time will tell.

I did not have to buy another shifter. Tony replaced the one i had with no problem. So far no issues but it's not 100 degrees outside yet. Since i sold my B&M when the squeak comes back i will sell the truck and get a Prius. No shifter in Prius, right?

we use a certain plastic to make the pivot ball, and keep the tolerances super tight for long wear, out of a few hundred sold I haven't had a but a couple say theres squeak, I suppose there are those that I just do not hear from , but chaynick knos I will try to do what I can, I will talk to the machinest see if there is another product we can use, the latest ones we have made have graphite impregnated into the pivot ball, so that may have helped, we could make a loose goose I just chose to make it as tight a pattern as we possibly can

I rather sell it back to you than see you or anyone buy a freakin Prius.

I messaged Tony, so hopefully I can get this resolved. Doesn't sound like taking it apart and adding grease is a permanent fix :(

Tony, the tight tolerances is one of the great things about your shifter. The feel, look and throw are amazing. I had no extra trans noises compared to the stock hurst, but the damn squeek will drive you fucking insane lol.

i hope when i have some extra money, i can pick up a used gen 2 shifter. or trade for a b&m.

Just an update on this - not trying to "BASH" Tony, rather just reveal the facts: I received "a shifter" back after returning mine because of the squeak (see below video link), not the shifter I had sent him, but "a shifter" he described as "we took that shifter right out of another truck? we have your shifter here, actually that shifter is from my personal truck." Upon attempting to install said shifter, the gear shift lever was installed into the housing the opposite way (see below pictures). Having the shift knob in the passenger seat is clearly incorrect, and installing it in the correct orientation means the rubber shift grommet/collar that goes around the base of the shifter housing won't install correctly, which is also incorrect.

At this point, I have $420 wrapped up in a product that hasn't worked for me "as advertised." I wasn't willing to deal with that dreaded squeak, and for $399.99 I felt the shifter should have the correct fit/finish, and not have to be sent back again to be modified OR opened by me to be modified.

I contacted Tony to return the shifter - I paid to ship it back to him - altogether I'm in this thing for $440 (I have all the receipts). When discussing a refund, he was not that pleasant to speak to over the phone - he hung up on me - despite my best efforts to calmly come to a resolution. He wanted to charge me a 20% restocking fee for a product that never worked "as advertised" in the first place. I would have gladly paid that if I was returning the product on my own terms, however I AM A MAN OF PRINCIPAL and I felt I should not have to pay a restocking fee in this situation.

RESOLUTION: I disputed the purchase with PayPal. Tony decided to escalate this to a "claim," and offered me $303.xx as a settlement. I respectfully declined, and the claim was handed over to PayPal to investigate and decide. All said and done, I returned the item to Tony and PayPal refunded me my full purchase price of $399.99. I was satisfied, despite being $40 out on shipping and the horrible customer service experience.

I GREATLY APPRECIATE the small vendors helping out a limited production platform. Tony has some really cool products that I wish I could buy...but I now refuse to, after how he treated me over the phone. I still run his PS and Oil lines, which work great. I just wanted to post up this info, so others knew the resolution.

Thank you,

Kyle
