I use Firefox as my browser...I tried to download an additional application (searchmybookmarks.com) and it has created an error message (below) that I cannot kill. I can work around the error message but it is a pain in the butt. I have had the error message for over a month.

Twice I have deleted Firefox and reinstalled, but that does nothing...the problem is a glitch in the install of the additional app.

Can someone give me some guidance in deleting the entire app...it is not reflected in my add/delete files...I think I will need to search for it and delete the entire files...but I don't remember enough about doing that...

Here is the entire error message:

Thanks in advance for any help you might suggest.

I have gone to Mozilla three or four times and asked for help, and I have also gone to the development site (searchmybookmarks.com) and begged for help to no avail.

Have you done a search of your hard drive for "Searchmybooks"?

I would think that would find it for you and then you could delete it.

How have you been removing them and reinstalling them? sometimes you have to use the setup wizard to install some apps. And are you using vista or xp?

Roy,

It sounds like the problem is in the registry.

There are a couple of places in the registry that I would look to start with:

First use ntbackup to make a copy of the registry. Go to Run and type ntbackup. It will start in the wizard mode, and should be fairly straight forward. Choose what to back up, and expand My Computer and check System State. Check my Documents to use as a backup site. Then follow the prompts to finish up.

Now into the Registry:
1st, go to Run or a command line, and type - regedit
The registry editor is like the explorer browser, meaning that you can open parts of it like an explorer tree. (Be very careful in the registry unless you know exactly what you are looking for!!)

The first place I would look is here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In this key, look for any entry that lists searchmybookmarks and delete it.

then look here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and look for the same thing, and delete any entry.

If you don't find any entries there, highlight "My Computer" at the top of the registry editor window, and press F3, in the search window type searchmybookmarks. The search function will take you directly to any entry that contains that search phrase. It should be safe to delete any entry that contains that phrase.

After you delete any entries you might find, leave the registry editor open, and try to open Firefox. If the problem still exists, look in the reg editor again. This should take care of it.

If you experience any problems, or have any questions, give me a call, I think you have my number.

When you uninstall Firefox be sure to follow all these directions Roy. Worth a try I guess.

Exit Firefox completely, open the Windows Control Panel and then,

* On Windows Vista, go to "Programs -> Programs and Features", select Mozilla Firefox <version> and click click Uninstall. [3]
* On Windows XP (or earlier), double-click "Add or Remove Programs" Select "Mozilla Firefox <version>" in the list of installed programs and click "Remove" to run the uninstaller.

Starting in Firefox 3, the uninstaller includes the option, "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations". This will also remove your Firefox user profile data (bookmarks, passwords, cookies, extensions, preferences, etc.). DO NOT select this option if you want to keep your Firefox profile data and settings.

Even if the uninstall fails, as it may in some cases, continue on with the rest of the uninstall instructions.

* Delete the Firefox Installation directory located here, by default: C:\Program files\Mozilla Firefox (Optionally make a backup copy of the "plugins" subfolder first, so that you can restore it later if you plan on reinstalling Firefox.)
* (Optional) Enable viewing or searching hidden files and folders (details here) then delete these additional files or folders (recommended if you are preparing for a clean reinstall):
o The Firefox folder that contains temporary data ( *.mfl files, Cache and Updates), located here: Important: Make sure you delete the Firefox folder under Local Settings or Local. Deleting the wrong folder will remove your user profile data!
+ Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox
+ Windows Vista: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox
o Windows Vista: The C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder [4] (if it exists)
o Windows XP/Vista: Delete all C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\FIREFOX* files
o If you installed the Quality Feedback Agent component (aka Talkback), open the %APPDATA%\Talkback\MozillaOrg\ folder and delete all "Firefox<somenumber>" folders found, for example, "Firefox10" "Firefox15" and "Firefox2".

* If necessary, remove the "Mozilla Firefox" shortcuts in the Windows Start -> Programs menu by right-clicking and deleting the entries. This step should not be needed unless the Firefox uninstall from the Windows Control Panel failed.

The Firefox uninstall will leave behind some Windows registry entries, which can be cleaned up using Windows regedit or a 3rd party registry cleaner. Normally, these extra entries are harmless, and it is not necessary to remove them. Note: registry editing is a potentially hazardous undertaking!.

You may also need to manually change some Windows file associations or icons, even after setting a new default browser, as reported here.

Thank guys...I'll be trying those ideas this afternoon.

Too much snow to do anything else!

Just go to the back, look for a black cord, pull real hard. If the screen goes black, You found it.

Now go into the garage and find the polish and wax your truck.

If the problem persists, you can restore your computer back to the way it was before you loaded the program. You lose anything that has been saved on your computer in the days since (unless you back those things up) but it will solve the problem. I forget exactly how to do this. Last time I did it, I just messed around in my system until I figured out how to do it. If you can't figure out how to restore, I am sure one of the "experts" can help. If you are running Windows Vista I can figure it out on my computer and help you.

I have Windows XP Pro and for that you click the start menu, go to "all programs" then look for "accessories", follow the little arrow over to open the tree and then choose "system tools" then in the tree choose "system restore"

Choose a restoration date that is prior to the date the program in question was installed.

It's so easy even a yettie can do it ;)

Hahaha!!

Well, let me know if you need me to "talk you through it".

There are other options too, like me remote controlling your computer to fix it.

Let me know.
