Anyone ever run a tune set for the 170 t stat, but still have the stock t stat in the car? While SRTBrad and i were driving home we were talking about that and i realized that the B&G Tune i have probley is set for the 170 T Stat but i never changed mine out. Now i order the correct 170 T Stat today which i will get tomorrow and im thinkin my truck wont run so damn rich after i switch it out. Any thoughts? Like ive said before my truck feels like it falls on its face when i cruise it but feels great at WOT. Also for the first time yesturday when i drove the truck and it was cold and raining out it threw a CEL for running to cold to long.....

Correct me if I'm wrong but the goal of changing the stat to a 170 is to lower the temp of the engine so that the Incoming charge of Fuel /Air mix stays denser. If you are throwing codes for running to cold for to long this probably won't help. Also if you are running rich now, again, this will make it worse. If you are running rich you should nail down what is causing it before swapping out the stat. My 2 cents.

Yea thats where im lost. If i have the stock 190 t stat but my tune is for 170 t stat shouldnt i be running kind of hot, but no truck is running normal around 180-200 but VERY VERY rich and code saying that is running to cold to long.....im gonna throw the correct Tstat just for sh!ts and giggles and see if it makes a difference but just wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem or done this before. If draining the radiator and changing the t stat wasnt such a PITA id ask someone to throw there stock t stat back in and see what happens hahahaha

Just be prepared to change it back if it runs considerably worse. If it's tuned for 170 it should help it but I'm not sure, you would think that running a cooler tstat wouldn't help it warm up faster though, but since you said you only throw a code when it's cold out I don't think it's going to be a huge issue. You may want to contact whoever did your tune and find out if they did the tune for stock or 170, they should have records. To me it just sounds like your tune is a bit off, is this an actual dyno tune?

and its possible if your tuned for 170 with stock thermostat your fan will either cycle a butt load or run all the time

Where do you have the AIT sensor on the air intake, i heard it controls A/F. It measures temp off incoming air, just a thought.

I have the B & G tune in my truck as well. I didn't change the stat out for several months after installing the CEU and didn't have any problems at all. When I did install the 170 stat the only difference I could see is that it would cycle the fan on a little sooner.

the code is for the t-stat put in the 170 and then if its still to rich look at your fuel trims and see how much fuel is being pulled or added

I mean it makes sence though if the PCM was tuned for 170 and im running a 190 its never gonna open the t stat right? Yea it runs like crap and ive only drivin maybe 100 miles in the past 12 months and this was the first time i ever got that code. But i do get a o2 code here and there and the rear o2s were turned off since i dont have cats. All four o2s are new and the rear ones are zip tied up. Im thinkin this tune just really sucks. Nope its the B&G mail order tune. I heard a lot of good things about these guys and a few people on here have the tune and say it works fine but my truck sure isnt likin it. Wish i would of got it running on the stock tune first before i had it flashed so i could of made sure there was no problems then id know if it was just a tuning issue or not

Fan does run ALOT

I have the K&N intake and i put it in the spot that they have pre drilled

Thanks for the info bud. What state are you in?

Another thing to consider....won't running it rich make it run cooler?
True true. Its so rich it smokes at idle or low RPM and struggles to idle if you dont rev it here and there to clear it out

T Stat should be here tomorrow so ill install it this weekend and see how it goes

I live in Oneida Tenn. Thats about 60 mile North of Knoxville.

Alot of people have their stock CEU they could loan you. You could put it on and see how it runs.

:top: That's my guess. You should go to a local shop and get it on a dyno. that's the only way I know for sure to get a good tune. Email tunes seem more like educated guesses to me. Just do your research and look for a good shop that you can trust and knows what they're doing.

The 190 t-stat will start to open earlier than that. The 190* is when it's fully open. It will always open no matter what your tune is. The only thing in the tune would be to turn the fans on sooner. If the fans are coming on quicker but the t-stat isn't open it doesn't really affect anything.

I also never trust mail order tunes. There's a lot that should be verified and that's impossible from 500 miles away in a different DA.

Yea we have a Dyno at our shop just need to get the correct software to tune dodge with SCT still.....

Go on SCT's website and they have a list somewhere of all the shops that they have certified to tune vehicles with their products.

I got DC Performance an hour away from me and if im gonna pay anyone to tune it itll be them forsure. But since we have our own dyno were thinking about just buying the software and doing it ourself but not sure if we have enough local dodge owners that would be interested in tunes so might be less of a headache to pay them but i wanna be sure its a tuning issue before i trailer the truck down to them. Also have tranny issues still

How much is the software going to cost as opposed to getting DC to tune it? Seems to me like buying the software is the way to go, but I've heard a lot of good things about DC so they might be the safe bet.

You have an auto right? :chain:

Lol IMHO manual is the only way to go.

Im sure they would charge around 400 ish and the software is about 400-500 ish so its about the same. But they already really know there sh!t. We tune honda's all day. I mean same consept, add a little fuel take a little fuel add some timing take some timing lol. Like i said though my biggest thing is towing it down there is such a hasstle and with the issues im having i dont wanna get it down there and find out somethings wrong with it and A, pay them to fiix it. or B, trailer it back home and fix it and waste there time ya know. I just wanna get it going somewhat good and be sure that if i take it to them there just gonna need to give it a solid tune to run right and make max power

With all the variables and uncertainties I would rather try and do it myself since you aren't totally sure it's a tuning issue and it could be other things, better to save the time and gas of driving out to DC, and since you tune cars regularly I don't think it will be too hard, may just take a bit longer than going to a shop where the guys have experience with these trucks.
